Hedonistic Opportunist 2007-08-02 . chapter 1Wow. This is a truly brilliant and well-thought out piece of work. It's so jarringly realistic and partly painful to read that I’m thoroughly impressed. Your work is always so mature, so grotesquely real and intelligent. Aside from that, your prose is just flawless: there are no glaring errors and everything flows perfectly. It might seem odd to praise that, but – again – it’s rare to find fics that aren’t cluttered with mistakes (my own included).
Anyways, the tone of this fic is deliciously – deceitfully -- light-hearted that’s easy to miss the point, if one doesn’t bother to read along the lines. That is a brilliant achievement in itself because makes this fic more thought-provoking and in many ways, more realistic (does this make sense?). Indeed, it wasn’t until I read the last few lines that I understood how serious and traumatic the whole situation is. It’s ironic because Tetsuya isn’t selfish or inconsiderate, but the exact opposite. You gave his character a lot of depth and vulnerability that his evident pain and frustration that I felt truly sorry for him.
I nearly loathed Yui while reading this, even though it is not entirely her own fault. Anyhow, what I mean to say is that I love, love the fact that you addressed how much of an effect Nakago did have on her. In the three years that I’ve been occasionally reading FY fic, you’re the first author to point out that the emotional trauma that the entire experience has left on her.
On many levels this piece saddened me greatly, but also gave me something to think about. And for that alone, you really are an excellent writer. |
KittyLynne 2007-07-31 . chapter 1A new story from Kelfin! *does the MayFic dance*
This fic takes the reader on a journey in many ways. Tetsuya's pov is wonderfully done; he comes across as a *real* guy in his thoughts and actions and rationalizations. Initially, he's very impressive in how he keeps his temper and shows his understanding and compassion for Yui...
But then there's the point in the story where both he and the reader pushed to the edge by her perpetual negativity and criticism. It was painfully and ironically clear to me by the end of the story that Yui isn't the only victim of abuse, and that Tetsuya has no idea he isn't doing her (or himself) a favor by enabling her to continue this type of behavior.
This point really rang home for me because I know a guy who was subjected to this kind of abuse while growing up. It took counseling and a long time for him to get over it.
Thanks for an excellent and thought provoking read.
Best Wishes,
