Yes!! This was something that JKR Needed to do, but missed! A master potions brewer and spy would have been ready with antidote, or prepared himself in some way - that door was made, yet left unopened by the author in canon. You are doing the right thing in fanon!!

It's typical Snape. He never plays fair with anyone. He even cheats death.
