2009-04-01 . chapter 7
Well, well, well... I've read all the story, and i must tell you that it's one of the best fiction i evere read on Mai Otome series: i liked the connection with Mai HiME (and surprisingly, the connection remains coherent with information taken by Mai Orome Sifr.), and the IC with Miyu character. The beaviour of Fumi is not similar to HiME counterpart, but in fact it's correct. The character of Ryoko is the revelation of the story (perhaps the future Windbloom's queen?): a normal woman with a normal life, work, husband, who gain the Otome power. So , the only oddity is the possibility of materializing without a GEM, just with nanomachines.

Hiya, this is AthenAltena/Katsuhagi (the two different hats I wear) and I finally got around to reading this. Overall very nice, and I think I'll add it to my personal canon. I was giggling at a few of the TV Tropes references ("cannot self terminate" etc.) and those were a nice touch. I also like your take on the Golden Millennium and how they ended up abandoning that idea through the Harmonium. And "Haru Imouto" definitely made me laugh after I got the reference.

Character-wise, I also like your taking a more human look at Fumi, and while I'm curious about the SELF thing I think it's a creative way to introduce that element. Miyu is also well-written and has a bit more depth to her than one usually sees, so props on that.

Just on the technical side I noticed a few places where quotations marks seemed to disappear, though 's system has also done that to me by accident. Nothing jumped out to me in terms of spelling errors.

Definitely looking forward to more from you.

Oh wow! I LOVE this! It makes sense, too, if you think about it. A really great read!

This story bothers me. Mostly because you've spun a world that does not really jive with my perception of what happened in HiME, or even in Hime Destiny, which I admit that I have stopped reading because it annoyed me so much.

Perhaps it would make more sense if you established in your story summery that this was a Destiny-based fic with those characters, you'd actually get a better response.

As people seem to really like that fic.

Some BTS comments for Chapter 2 (WARNING, SPOILERS).

* Nearly every detail I explicitly focus on is important to the plot somehow, or will be important later on. Including the GEM feedback output, wink wink.
* All mysteries will be explained later. Including the duplicate Fumi and yet-to-be-born Otome dopplegangers.
* And now the significance of "Mai HiME Ryō" is fully understood. "Ryō" refers to the main character, Ryoko, in addition to the meanings given earlier. It can also be read as "my chimera", referring, of course, to Searrs and their plans for world peace.
* "Ryoko Ragna", is, of course, a reference to Ragnarök, the end of the world, continuing the "Searrs' obsession with Norse mythology. Note that Ryoko and Fenton have different surnames despite being married. It happens.
* Mayo has handcuffs on, like her "Mai-HiME Destiny" incarnation... except the chain has been cut, allowing her to move her arms freely. Note that in this continuity, the events of Destiny itself
* Steingott (Stone God) is a loose German translation of Ishigami.
* The name of Adam Summers, the president of Aries, is a reference to Adam Susan (Adam Sutler in the movie) from "V for Vendetta". And a very opaque reference to Arthur Winters, the US president in the new "Doctor Who".
* "Amazon Girl" is a reference to the following "Calvin and Hobbles" exchange: "Is Amazon Girl's super power the ability to squeeze that figure into that suit? - Nah, they can all do that." The comic itself is a parody of those "patriotic" WWII American comics (which I despise, by the way) where superheroes humiliate Those Wacky Nazis in every way possible.
* Girasu and Lenro are anagrams of Garius and Lorne from "Neverwinter Nights 2". Which makes Sylvia the equivalent of Torio. It will be explained what these three are up to.
* For that matter, the supposed Japanese name for Sylvia's GEM is "Koujousei no Emerarudo" (恒常性のエメラルド). It's not a literal translation, as you may guess.
* In fact, that entire comedic scene is a shout-out to the Sailor Moon fanfic "Fuzzy Handcuffs" by Baka Gaijin30, found here on
* Miyu correcting "robot" with "cybernetic organism", as well as the leg-lifting, are references to "Terminator".
* "Fenton Venice" is supposed to resemble "Phantom Menace" ("Star Wars") when pronounced.

Some behind the scenes comments.

The title is supposed to be read by the kanji, as "Mai HiME Ryou". describes the last kanji as "completion, finish, understanding", and all of these are relevant here. It also bears a resemblance to the number 1, like 乙 in Otome to 2, and also refers to the main character (whose name is yet to be revealed).

The chapter title "The End of HiME" refers, of course, to "The End of Evangelion", the immortal downer ending. There are a few more Evangelion references throughout the story; for instance, the words in square brackets are to be interpreted as "white text on black" screens in the Evangelion opening.

And yes, the song is also relevant. The lyrics can be found here:

The "United Nations Intelligence Taskforce" is a throwaway reference to Doctor Who.

Judging by "Zeroth", Searrs has a habit of starting numbering from 0. So, if Alyssa was "Valkyrie No. 143", she may have actually been the 144th - nice round number, twelve times twelve.

Considering names.

From Wikipedia: "Bifröst is, in Norse mythology, the bridge leading from the realm of mortals, Midgard, to the realm of the gods, Asgard, which the gods travel daily to hold their councils and pass judgements at Urdarbrunn (Well of Urd) under the shade of the tree Yggdrasil. The bridge itself is the rainbow and its guardian is the god Heimdallr, whose hall of Himinbjorg is located at the upper end of the bridge. The red color was the flaming fire, which served as a defense against the giants. The bridge is destroyed at the end of the world, Ragnarök."

And while we're talking Norse mythology, note that Miyu is already "Merciful I.Y.U.", not "Multiple I.Y.U.", when the story begins. Perhaps her name was changed during these 300 years that have passed since the events of HiME.

I have also seen "Searrs" written as "SEARRS" in fandom, probably as a tradition stemming from the Evangelion organizations SEELE, GEHIRN and NERV (which are really just German words written in all caps). However, Searrs is explicitly a surname - I would hardly expect, say, Ford (Motor Company) to be written in all caps, since it's the surname of its founder.

Xelman Greenwood is named after two users of Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki.

For Miranda, I just remembered Miranda Instant Messenger.

When I named Jonathan Searrs, I was thinking about Jonathan Kent, the adopted father of Superman. Naomi is a name that exists in both English and Japanese, which reflects the ethnic mish-mash seen in Otome.

Mayo and Shion are both from the Mai-HiME Destiny novel series, with their surnames changed ("otomefied").

All of the names of newly introduced, including Japanese-sounding ones, are to be presumed to be written in katakana, not kanji, in Otome fashion.
