abuseAwesome!

I really LOVED that gesture with the cigarettes.
And I have to admit that at the end I had to swallow real hard.

Great Job!

abuseI was always interested into reading something like this, and I think you've portrayed it perfectly--in my head, at least.

I like how Ruby was thinking about how horrible Dally was, and then Bill came to tell her the news and she was completely dumbfounded.

When people die, you really don't feel it's real until you go to their funeral, nonetheless, months later when you realize they're totally gone. It's pretty creepy ...

The story felt so real, and I feel as if I can relate in some sort.

And that little ending with the cigarettes just made me smiles. I don't know why lol.

Anyway, it was a great story :) I really liked it a lot.
Keep it up.

abuseI can't believe I never read this! It's so sad... I honestly feel a little sick to my stomach just reading it.

I particularly love how you ended it, that last line... amazing. It's really the best way you could have pulled this one-shot together.

I love how this is about Dallas, but also Tim and Ruby... it's definitely focusing on Dally's death, but it's still got that Tim and Ruby subplot. You did a great job at not letting that subplot overtake the story though.

I like Tim's thoughts on all this, how he contemplates Ruby and Dally's relationship. "She’d probably miss having someone to fight with, too." His thoughts are... simple, but profound. If that makes sense. It's definitely Tim thinking it, but it's very deep if you look closer.

"As much as he hated the bastard sometimes, there was something about Dallas Winston. He was good with a knife – Tim had the scar to prove that – he would jump into a fight anytime and he could drink just about anybody under the table. He was a good man in a rumble.

He’d steal your girlfriend and laugh about it, then buy you a beer to even the score. He’d take a few extra punches at a guy who’d done you wrong in the past during a rumble. He’d share a smoke with you, then steal a pack out of your pocket a day later. He’d slash your tires when he knew you’d just bought them, then take the beating and relish telling the story later.

Tim guessed he’d probably miss Dally for awhile."

That is definitely my favorite part of the entire thing.

Anyway, this is just amazing.

abuseTim missed the point, I think.

I like his reaction a lot, from a writing standpoint. Tim is the type to compartmentalize his life and definitely the type to repress him emotions. He wouldn't even admit that he and Bill were friends as well as "business partners" - I'm not surprised that he finds it hard to accept that he and Dally were close friends in spite of all the shit they gave each other. Tim would need a defense mechanism to deal with the sadness, and I like the anger choice - denial for survival seems very much in his nature.

I'm only glad from a writer's standpoint though. From a reading perspective, I'm furious with him for being such a dickhead about Ruby. I don't want to belittle any of what Tim has gone through. Betrayal is harsh. But, he's in a lot of needless pain right now. You'd think, with Laura around crying her eyes out about having lost Dallas, that he'd learn to bend his rules a little. LOL. What am I saying? This is Tim.

With Dally's death there's a huge sense of unfulfilled promise - between him and Laura, yes, but also in just the canon. "He could have been so much more." You look at Ruby and Tim and it's the same thing. Dally wouldn't go for what he wanted because his pride got in the way . Tim is the same.

I do really like those parallels from a writing point, though.

I'm glad he doesn't seem to learn from Dally's death, lol. Tim's a quick thinker and very smart, but I love how slow he has to be when dealing with his feelings.

I love the little detail about getting his age wrong. It's gives off a feeling of coldness about Dally's death - it's very impersonal. It also pegs him as less of a victim if he's 18 - legally an adult - rather than 17. I imagine that's why the mistake is there - I bet it's intentional, since there were six witnesses to the death who were his best friends.

The title - lol, I actually have a one-shot with the same title (unposted). So, obviously, I like it! I like the irony - life/death. Though, I'm not sure I completely get it.

I absolutely love the imagery in the final scenes, with all the blue light and shadows and Tim's cigarette. Beautiful descriptions.

Nice job! Looking forward to the sequel! Are you seriously waiting until it's completely done to post it?! Like...another fifty two chapters?!?!

P.S. Reading your books as I have a week of beaching coming up far, far from the internet, lol - so far it's very cute! Lots of fun.

abuseYou write Tim so well. He was able to figure out why Dallas wanted to die quickly. Some people tend to forget he's quite smart--he is a leader of a downtown gang, after all. I love it when you write his point of view.

And I love all of Ruby's thoughts in it, too. Her and Dallas weren't really best friends, but she'll miss him. When Tim mentioned he'd miss Dally and him fighting then said Ruby would too, I couldn't help but laugh.

Another awkward moment for Tim and Ruby. Not really full of hated, but not really "I still love you!" sappy, un-realistic thing. Ruby's urge of kissing Tim's damaged hand made me smile. They still do have feelings for each other, and it's clear, but they'll never admit it.

Over all, great writing. Tim throwing a pack of cigarettes to Dally's grave, lol. I really liked this :)

abusei really enjoyed this one. it was sad, and tim and ruby are still not really 'there' yet. idk how to say it right. like, they're not ready to forgive yet. (well, tim isnt, ruby always has been ready...) i really did like it though, so thanks for posting/writing/etc it. :)

abuseI really liked how you potrayed Tim's reaction it was true to his charchter and their friendship. I fell bad for Ruby though it was like she lost Dallas and Tim. Im with Tim(I know he is just a charchter lol) I always though there was somthing there between the charchter's if it was only on Ruby part. I really hope you post that sequel soon !pretty please?

abuseTo be honest I wasn't sure how Tim would react to it all. But (as usual) the way you write his emotions is phenomenal. You make him sad, but angry also. I really like that - Tim being angrier that Dallas took "the easy way out", than him being sad his best friend of sorts is dead. It's also nice to see more of Tim's thoughts about Ruby and Dally's relationship.

"It felt like there were ghosts lurking around every corner, and it was almost as if Dally was there."
Haha. That made me laugh. Irony is totally awesome.

"Protecting and destroying. It seemed like all any of them knew how to do."
It's seems like that is so true (which is why it was so sad). Like how Soda would drag race or (from what Pony said) join in with Dally when he was talking "dirty" to Cherry at the movies, but on the other hand cares so much about his brothers and Sandy.

abuseI'd assumed Ruby would go, feeling she owed it to him. I loved the way you described how Ruby was feeling, and then had Tim realize/remember it at the end. It made me want to smile and cry at the same time, incredibly bittersweet.

Tim's thought process with the whole situation was great, and exactly how one would think he'd react, only described better than I ever could.

This has to be one of my favorite pieces of fanfiction ever. Fantastic job, you are an incredible writer.

abuseSo bittersweet. I always thought they'd find out together, but then the end came, and it didn't turn out that way.

I get the way that Ruby feels, he screwed her over, but she still wanted to say goodbye. She still felt like she owed him, like she was a part of his life, attached.

'He looked at the patch of dirt and shook his head. Dally was a damn fool to go out like he did. He ever saw him again, he was going to knock the son of a bitch on his ass for doing it, too.'

Loved that line, so fitting for someone - especially Tim - thinking about how Dallas went out.

Good job.
