Oh this is very touching and heartwarming! I love it. The explanations of saddness and why we need it in our lives and how it helps us to realize what happiness is really struck a chord with me.

Is Mel an original character? She seemed so real and tangible that it sort of seemed as if she was more than other original characters.

(Are you planning on writing anymore with Don and Mel? I like the two together. Their dynamic together is fantastic...and though you may be one of those people that would shoot me for suggesting this, I think they could make a cute couple because they can both understand each other and how they think. They don't have to worry about appearances or anything because they just understand each other at such an emotional and psychological level that that doesn't matter.)

Cool fic. Poor Donnie. I often wonder if he does feel unloved.

Having gone through a crappy week myself, this story touched me deeply. Characterization was great. I liked how you blended Mel's thoughts and her actions to describe how she's feeling while just using Don's actions and Mel's observations to show Don's feelings.

And the ending was so perfect yet a teaser! I hope you'd continue writing more about Mel. In such a short story, you've created a like-able and realistic character!
