Why is it I can visualize her speaking these lines; hear her voice in my head as I read?

Because you're a supremely talented author, that's why!

Aang's change in demeanor would definitely bother her... SCARE her, as you put it.  The overall theme of hopelessness and despair is a stark contrast to Katara's normally optimistic nature, making for a fascinating read.

Can hardly wait to see where you'll take this -- Aang, especially!
