As Augie said earlier in the episode, "Scooter can't set up a tripod". The plan depended on Scooter's stupidity. He didn't notice that Augie suddenly had black hair.

To be fair to ol' Scoot, he didn't see "Augie" for that long. Fillmore and Ingrid ran into the dark, unlit section of the school quite quickly. This was why Jamie Townsend didn't notice - they were in the dark rock climbing room.

Fun little scene.
