Pretty original. I like the characterization of Gendou. It was obvious, though (to me at least), that Gendou was going to lose. Dramatic irony, I guess -- Gendou was incredibly certain, to the point of lecturing about how he was going to win in a very pretentious way; typically that is "rewarded" with losing, especially in moral tales and such.

I always wanted to do something like this. Good job.

No, seriously good job. He needs more love. Not a lot, just more than absolute 0. The man does come through, and tries to salvage a world in chaos.

There is more going on in his head than, "Everyone is a pawn...I am in control..me..me...oh god..me!"


Even if you did use...er..chess. Chess is more complicated than a mere power struggle.

I do enjoy fics where Gendo is portrayed as more than a 2D 'Evil Bastard', and this is one of the best I've read. Still, I can't see him taking his eyes off the opponent's most important pieces, but perhaps Fuyutsuki was more subtle than can easily be portrayed. A minor quibble.

I don't know why this hadn't got any reviews!

It was a great one-shot. You kept gendo in character and offered us a more humane view of him, loved it.
