LOL! This was so funny all the way through, but Boromir being tossed off the eagle and falling into "an abandonded elven boat" really...I could just see this! Boromir, shield, horn of Gondor, sword and all flopping down with a big thump, and wildlife fleeing in all directions, and orcs running back to Sauron.

Do you know, this is exactly the question I was asking myself this morning! Well, not the scottish elf and all that about Gandalf and Elrond, but why didn't the eagles fly them to Mordor? I guess the Nazgul might have got in the way, but still, if they went very quietly?

Well, I guess then there wouldn't be a story, would there? Flying would be far to easy.

Why didn't they? Great story, tell your dad's friend I think his version is far more sensible.
