Alexander - Godslayer 2008-04-23 . chapter 2Well, it's a bit late, but here I come with the review for this fic for once and for all. Starting off, I gotta say that, when I readed the tittle, I instantly suspected that Catgirl would be a part of this, since she had been the most "notable" member of the Justice Squad during the introduction to the previous scene of this fic, not to mention the only one who had a fanart done by DarkDP. ^^
Anyway, going to the fic now. Like I told you before, I think this episode was amazing in terms of “smart quotes”, many of them belonging to Ron, surprisingly (“Catfig-!”). And some moment/situation were just… well, to put an example, I half-wanted Rufus to really be coming for that Brian dunnowhat with his “friends at the dark house” (?) after finding out about that guy at YouTube. Yet, thinking about Rufus like that was… well, too creepy.
But while I loved that material from the episode, I really can’t congratulate the plot of it, since it looked like it was just taken out of the brief explanation of Kim from Shin’s episode (“We go to their lair, we get captured, we break free, stop their plan and send them to jail”, something like that, though this time the fifth step couldn’t be done). The villain of turn, though, was really an unexpected one. So I guess it was a good picking.
Anyway, with the style and plot of the fic already revised, let’s get to talk about what’s probably the most interesting thing of this series: The characters! :D
We’ll begin with the canonical ones. Mainly Kim. You know, if there was one thing I didn’t like about “Maternal Instinct” (not sure if I mentioned this in the reviews or not), it was that Kim hadn’t really changed during the process of the story, as she was practically the same at the beginning and at the end. The only obvious difference was that she had started to date Shego. But other than that, Kim was (and might still be) the less development one so far. However, this episode showed some changes about her, not sure if for the best or not, but the fact of Shego rubbing off Kim is, well, something.
Moving on to Ron, who is one step away from becoming the typical main character of any comical/romantic manga of the latest (XD), I’ll start by saying I really liked his participation on this fic. He had some of the coolest quotes, and while I can’t point out anything in particular, his character does give a feeling of being slowly but notably growing up into someone more competent. I’d add something about Rufus here… but I can’t think of anything but what I already said (The creepy look XD).
And regarding Shego, her epilogue-ish scene was quite cute. On one side, this really makes me wonder if this’ll be the last mission she stays out from. On the other, I’m kinda liking her development, and I loved the idea of marriage taking place. Let’s see how that progress.
And since there ain’t any other canonical character taking any relevant place so far, I’ll got with the originals…
Starting with the one who’s nearly the lead star of this episode, Catgirl! A very nice girl, though I’m not sure if I have so much to say about her. Her cat-style is well worked, I guess, all in her fighting style, how protective she is toward cats, how “good” she is with them, and even in her attitude at one point. Also, it seems interesting that she has some background as hero before joining the Justice Squad. Heck, basically, there could be a lot to exploit from this one girl. How she got started in this “business”, for what reason, and what are her morals. It’s nice to see she has her own arch-rival, though this is almost making it look like every female hero just must have her equivalent opposite (Kim/Shego, Jen/Cobalt, and now Catgirl/Sheela). Just help me and pray my ranch of plotbunnies doesn’t bug this area too much or I won’t be surprised if I come up with a story for her… (What can I say? Your universes are just too much fun to explore)
And speaking about the arch-rival, here we got a nekomata (MEOW!), thief, glamour-lover, lesbian and sexy thief: Sheela! Who even has a stolen nickname! (Do you remember that Shego’s real name in this series is nearly the same, right?) Okay, enough with the silly introduction. Anyway, like your author notes at the end said, yeah, it’s kinda of weird to have another lesbian on the story, but what really intrigues me is the reason behind it, since there’s apparently one around there. Other than that, all I can say is that it’s nice to see that, like Catgirl, Sheela has an apparently solid personality.
With that said, I got it almost all covered. All that reminds to tell is that White Knight earned some good points for me with his appearance at the end… while on the other hand, I SO wanted to punch Will Du. Gr… m! Plotbunnies!
Well, nice to have another episode of the MI series covered, and I think I’ll be reading the chapters focused on the Justice Squad at Spotlight soon. ‘Til then, take care, and good luck with your issues about your computer.
