Maybe the counters sounded familiar to Echizen though he doesn't remember anything, or he could be thinking about it after getting his memory back. We could also say that this takes place after the Nationals, with Echizen watching a videotape of the match.

I like how you described reactions to the names of each counter. I was wondering why they were all named after animals, except the last one. Fuji called Gate Keeper of Hecatonchires his final counter, but now he can't anymore if he has a 6th one. I wonder if he will upgrade his 5th and 6th coutners.

Fuji's counters do have peculiar names. As for the sixth counter, it probably had something to do with the trajectory of the ball, because it shoots up much like a firework when lighted, then veers off to an irregular path back to the court.

Anyways, this was a really cute read. I enjoyed it. :3
