They say pride goes before a fall. Light was certainly spoiling for that. Pity his logic couldn't accept that he had killed people who had committed no crimes save the one of trying to stop him (FBI agents, L, Naomi Misora, Wammy, Aiber, Wedy); plus the ones he used as tools who were indeed loyal to him (Takada); he considered more than once killing Misa, destroyed a shingami, and didn't even care much that his father, who cared about him, died. He only cared that his father write Mello's true name. Humans who compare themselves to gods end up suffering for it in the end.
