wow, she's one brave five-year-old! Good story!

Hmm...she reminds me a bit of Pearl. Y'know, from 'The Scarlet Letter'? Nice story!

...you never cease to amaze me.

The ending was so stunning and poignant, I'm always trying to write something like that. Also, the way you got into the child-like mentality is believable and greatly worded:

“Sweetheart,” he said, and Elphaba knew she did not like him
-heck yeah, he probably would have bugged me more than any of them. Be a jerk all you want, but get pompous/condecsending with me and I bite you.

"What about that little girl?”

-for some reason, this (awesome) line reminded me of when I went to the bookstore today. I was browsing, and somehow I went from new YA to a shelf nearby, where inbetween "maps" and "cooking" was a (tiny) section called "Gay/Lesbian". Like they couldn't be placed on the same shelf in a genre because the main characters weren't straight. Or, at the very least, in the political section. And they basically looked all the same, with plots about coming out and blah blah blah and God can't a lesbian be the kid who discovers she a non-Wiccian witch on her thirteenth birthday/get shipped off to prepschool, just once?

Sorry. Rant time over.

- I really like how you used "the five year old". It's like that whole "act like children, get into the Kingdom of Heaven" thing. Or at least, yeah dork this is common sense go back to kindergarden.

Aww, this was fantastic! I absolutely adore things with little Elphaba, and I can totally and completely see this happening. Even at age 5 she's already sticking up for the people who no one else would stick up for. Fabulous, brilliant, superb, marvelous - you get the idea.
