It would be more amusing if it would actually work. One of the attacks of the sound ninja physically hurt people by making sound vibrations corresponding to the natural vibration of the body, thus shattering them. Deafness would not protect one from this.

Oh, that's so cool. I get it, he's reading lips so he knows what they are saying and he's probably feeling the vibrations in his chest and the movements of his own lips and tongue to speak... which wouldn't be perfect, hence the slur.
