I do want to add, kind of for the person that asked, that historical events like wars or the end of the Great Depression aren't necessarily something that would have happened as one single defining event, and weren't often thought of immediately in the same terms like they're thought of today. Part of what we refer to as WWII... namely, the beginnings of the Pacific theater... was already being fought at this point, so it is entirely possible that Emily could have been at least slightly aware of what war was at such an early age. Germany had also been doing some stuff in Europe for some time already that people worried about but kind of chose to ignore, like "annexing" parts of other countries. The headline from 1939 that was probably about Germany's invasion of Poland, and Britain's reaction, would probably not have been the first war-related headline in Emily's life, although it was totally the one that finally brought the realities of war - an what would become World War II - into her happy little world. |
