2009-08-02 . chapter 6
Phew… alright, after no clue of how many months since I actually started reading this, giving it some moments from time to time, I actually finished reading it. Now for an overall complicated review for which I got consider many points, including my ignorance about the Doctor Who series and stuff.

But let’s start for the Crossover factor of the fic.

Now, for what I can tell, the three universes presented here (Kim Possible’s, Doctor Who’s, and Scrubs’) were overall really well mixed. Whenever I’d see characters from different series interacting, even if I didn’t know them too well, I could tell things were working out really well, making interesting and well done scenes, even with some comments expanding the universe (like mentioning Amy Hall at one point), all without ever risking the “In-Character-ness” of them. Although different, the universes seemed to match properly for this idea.

But with that said, there’s one slight, or not so much (depending on the reader), problem with this idea and that’s what I’d call… a mistake on the target public, or how to “welcome the public” maybe. Allow me to expand…

For a crossover between three series, the “proportions” of the story each universe fills in the story is very uneven. Scrubs’ characters and elements get dropped after just a couple of chapter, but even when it’s only a Who/KP crossover, the importance the KP side takes only reaches the 25% of the story’s at max. It does manage to reach a level of significance to the story, but it still feels secondary. The only thing that ensures Ann’s status as a protagonist of the story is the fact that things are most of the time happening from her point of view.

And speaking of point of view, I must say I believe that element to be very important when wanting to introduce something “unknown” to the reader. And that was something that sort of bothered me at the beginning: Starting the story with The Doctor.

Even though the introduction is not bad at all, it’s still an introduction that only works for those who already know Doctor Who. Me? I had to go check Wikipedia to sort out a couple of things before finally managing to comprehend what the hell the narration was talking about, and later I had to make another revision to check some other things. What can I say? If you ask me, from my impression on this, I’d say Doctor Who’s show practically runs on Not-Making-Any-Sense, but whatever, that’s irrelevant in this case and not my place to question if I haven’t watched the show. The ACTUAL problem here is that the fic doesn’t help much to a reader’s possible confusion. It takes the reader for granted, which you can only do if you happen to have readers that know all you’re working with. The story still works, despite of the unanswered questions, but it leaves an uncomfortable feeling about it.

What does manage to keep things working, I believe, is that the story follows Ann’s point of view almost every time it can. Since she’s the only character readers will certainly recognize and know about, following both her ignorance and her learning about the situation make things more relatable to the reader. For the same reason, I can’t help but to think the story should have pretty much began with her instead of the Doctor and later introduce everything about him through her learning and maybe an explaining flashback. Not too much point in mentioning it now, but at least, that’s my honest opinion.

It honestly feels unfitting to have the fic on the Kim Possible section when there’s so little relevance of the show itself on the overall fic, specially considering the only protagonist from that show is a secondary one from it. And besides that, I really can’t approve of taking the readers for granted because you had already introduced the characters from Scrubs in the series before, like you mentioned in some of your author’s notes. But I think I already made my point with this. Let’s now focus on the story.

Now, despite of the lack of sense some things tend to make that I mentioned before, the story actually made a good job in pointing the direction in which things were going. The objectives where put mostly clear, so what the Doctor and Anne would go and do wasn’t really questionable. And as for an adventure story, it really had a lot to offer: Chase scene, some WTF moments, infiltration, running against time, and even some confrontations, and while the Doctor and the Master don’t seem like much of fighters, the scenes were still interesting.

And regarding the Doctor itself, this silly guy who keeps doing nothing but stuff nobody cares abou-! Okay, okay! AHEM! Like I was saying: I can’t seem to grasp what kind of hero (if the title even fits) the Doctor is, but at least he’s certainly not put as invincible or superior. Now, I’m afraid I couldn’t find his personality much interesting (the Master was far more fascinating), but he wasn’t annoying either, so he cut fairly well for protagonist here.

While I had it hard getting interested on the whole story because of how much it inevitably confused me, I must say the fic had it’s highlighted moments, like when Ann died, which had my eyes opening wide and motivated my interest for the sake of knowing how the hell this was going to fit what was seen in the rest of the series. The resolving was… a bit disappointing, but the ending overall felt satisfying, and at the end there’s a cute epilogue featuring Shin as the adorable baby that certainly made me feel glad I had reached that far in the story.

In the end, I couldn’t help but to feel a bit sad that, even though this was a prequel, it didn’t much any foreshadowing that could later be used with Kim or others character later in the series. I’d dare call it wasted potential, but… whatever.

Overall, the story was good. It failed to interest me, but I doubt I could present to a fair judgment on that being unknown to two of the three series featured in this fanfic. The presentation had its flaws, but if readers can put up with that, the story will work.

Now with this finally over, I’ll be able to keep reading forward in the series. I just… hope there ain’t that much crossover from here onwards. ^^U

Anyway, hope this review helps you.
And see you around. ^_^

All in all, a VERY nice bit of work; congratulations are DEFINITELY in order.
You very effectively kept everything good about the original movie (Particularly my favourite line: DOCTOR: “You want dominion over the living, yet all you do is KILL!” MASTER: “Life is wasted on the living!”), while working in enough new elements and twists to keep it interesting for those readers who’ve seen the original; never an easy thing to do, but you managed it very nicely.
And as for that final epilogue, with the Tenth Doctor briefly dropping in to check up on his old friend...
Nice touch, I have to admit; any chance it’ll be followed up in a future story of yours?
If nothing else, I would DEFINITELY like to see how Kim reacts to the discovery that her mother once actually saved the world- before SHE even got into the business, I might add- on a scale that even SHE has never accomplished...
On the topic of Kim, my only complaint about this story was that Kim and the Doctor never met face-to-face- as I said in my last review, I have a feeling that meeting would have been rather interesting to see-, but that aside it was still good; guess the meeting with Kim is being saved for the sequel (If you decide to write one).
Keep up the good work; I DEFINITELY can’t wait for more!

That was quite interesting. I really quite enjoyed the bit where Ann had to reassure her daughter that Shin was in capable hands and perfectly fine. Although, I kinda wonder what you'll come up with if you do bring the Doctor in this universe again. It certainly would at least be interesting. Anyway, thanks for posting all of this!

I was kinda wondering why there was another chapter part when it felt like everything was winding down towards the end. As the whole story felt like things were getting ready to come to a close there. But it was still quite enjoyable. And I thought you did quite well handling this whole story. Anyway, on to the next chapter!

Not bad. I especially enjoyed the bits with the chase scenes. Although, I'm wondering how things will work out, since I still haven't seen the movie. But it's quite good still. And I would have read this sooner, but I've fallen behind on a lot of my reading. But I'm sure I'll be able to finish this quickly. Anyway, on to the next chapter!

I think these few words say it all for the whole thing: Amazing! Marvelous! Stupendous! Colossal! Tremendous! Gigantic! Astounding! Unbelievable! Spectacular! Phenomenal! And it's good, too.

Well, I would've left reviews for each chapter, but I got so sucked in that I just HAD to see how it ended. This isn't quite a flood yet, but I hope it'll do for tonight.

So, as you may have guessed, I LOVED this fic. Absolutely LOVED it.

9.5/10. Why the half-point off? I dunno. Seems right, I guess. XD

You've still got it. Cheers, mate. :D

This is pretty interesting so far. I think you do a very good job of keeping those of us who know nothing of The Doctor informed. I hope the trend continues.

I DO think this chapter is a little setup-heavy, and nothing REALLY exciting has happened yet. And no, the Doc coming back from the dead doesn't count, as I saw it coming from a mile away, as anyone reasonably smart would. I mean, if he wasn't alive, we'd have no crossover, right? ;)

But yeah, aside from that, there's little in this chapter that's revelatory. Not that I'm complaining, really; your dialogue and descriptions are top-notch as always, and your facility with pacing definitely paid off in this instance, as the chapter was a breezy read. And I'm excited to read more, which is, I'd imagine, at least a little bit of a compliment.

I find Ann's role in this particularly intriguing. One hopes she'll have a better day tomorrow, when she finds that her patient is alive.

To sum up: digging it so far, have negligible complaints that can be easily remedied further along in the story, and love the writing. I'd say that qualifies as a good 8/10 for this chapter, wouldn't you?

Blackbird,

I usually have a long, drawn-out review for a piece, dissecting every aspect of a chapter.

Besides suggesting you change the status of this story to 'Complete' if this is truly the end, I just have one blanket gesture for the entire 6-chapter saga...

(Gives standing ovation)

10 Doctor being kind of a dick there. Probably preparing Anne for a future adventure. But with time travel being funny she probably see a earlier Doctor.

Too bad about to the aparent lukewarm reception. Doctor being in the KP universe has so many possiblilies.

Read you later!

This going so great!
I love how this Doctor Who adventure is going this time around.
With Ann Possible being part of it being one of the reasons why.
It's like I'm experiencing the viewing of this adventure for the first time again.
I guess you could say I am.
I know that this will remain a favorite of mine for all time.
One of my favorite parts was when Ann asked The Doctor about her future and The Doctor going on about why he couldn't answer her.
I wouldn't be surprised if he wished he could've said something about the Lowardian invasion to come.
To help her prepare for it in some way.

This is all so very grand.

A great end to a great adaptation/X-over. I've seen few Doctor Who crossovers done so coherently, especially ones as rare as with this fandom. Although I'm not quite familiar with the KP AU you have this set in, I was still able to enjoy it.

Makes me think what her interaction with the current Doctor (or any of the other 8) might be.

That was a bit unexpected. I thought that this one was totally grounded in the TV series KP universe. Just goes to show you can't assume everything.

Kim definitely had that first time mom skittishness. Having babysat for nieces and nephews, I know the feeling. But why didn't the Doctor take a minute or two to actually say 'Hi' to Anne? Not sure why he ducked out once she spotted him.

And was that a nod to BTAS in that last line...?
