This would be an example of a Roman weapon that was remarkably similar to a gattling gun of the late 19th century. The Roman version was powered by a hand crank and was loaded from the top. One soldier would turn the crank to fire and recock the bow while another soldier would feed replacement darts into a six round magazine at the top. These darts while similar in shape to arrows were much heavier, the shaft was about as big around as a mop handle. These weapons were mostly used from fixed fortifications such as walled cities due to thier lack of pure throwing power. The dart was made heavier in the front in order to take advantage of gravity pulling it down. Imagine two guys up on a tower shooting this thing up into the air in an arc at the general direction of a mass of enemy troops. It was not a pin point weapon but more of an area denile weapon. |
