Reviews for: Image of a Special Victim

I could totally relate to Sarah and my heart went out to her. I once felt the same horror, shame, numbness, anger and hatred - in this order - and so much in between. I'm a special victim myself.

You hit Olivia right on the spot - I could easily picture her coaxing Sarah to finally accept the inevitably. THAT is the hardest thing to do - take it as a fact and make the best of it.

I head for the "Olivia" part of the story. What she said, how she acted reminded me of how I was once coaxed into telling what had happened to me. This memory, these hours, stayed as vividly as the deed itself in my mind. Since I'll never get that out of my head I could as well use it to help others who suffered the same.

You caught both the poor mentality of the victim as well as that of the investigator perfectly and it made my eyes water.

Very, very well done. You've done an excellent job with a very difficult subject. Both your characterizations are perfect.

Somehow saying that I enjoyed his fic seems wrong. But I think you know what I mean. It was well written and interesting.

A couple of especially noteworthy lines:

//before taking half a dozen pills to prevent disease or pregnancy, before spreading this and opening that so doctors could see if he had left a piece of himself in me,//

This did a superb job of capturing the dehumanizing processes that occur during those initial hours in a rape investigation.

//The special victim is crying in the arms of a cop who is silently angrier at the world than I ever could be and the tears will not stop coming.//

This captured the essence of Olivia.

Wow. I've never read anything like this before. Not one story I've read has told things from the eyes of a 'victim'. It was strangely endearing and, I can assure you, very accurate. I felt every emotion.

Wow, I really have no words to write here, I'm just very impressed. Olivia was wonderfully in character, but I was able to see a side to her I wouldn't have been able to see if it was told from, say, Elliott's POV.

I've read stories from the eyes of the killer or criminal, and they have always held a certain 'intrigue' to them, but this created a whole new level of attention.

Great work.

Kaitco,

this is flippin' brilliant! Thank you for writing it, for telling us the truth about special victims, and about the fact that it's not just something you get over and carry on; but it's something that can define you and change you and make you into something or someone else.

Added to my favourites because this is an important fic, dealing with a real issue in a realistic way.

This is the line that got to me:

My life is not mine anymore. Everything that happens from here on out is after him and any memory I have is what happened before him.

Perfect. Just perfect.

Heads up:

I was just too goddamn scared to [do] anything but let it happen!

I do love watching SVU. The intensity of this piece is very impressive. The OC is perfect. Olivia is Olivia-esque.

There are a few grammar errors you can probably fix if you read over it again in a day or two. The one thing that distracted me from the story was the formality of the prose. I just don't think it's appropriate for this fandom. I write very formally for LOTR because I generally write elves and they're pretty 'refined', but when I write in other fandoms it seems more natural to use contractions and less rigid grammatical structure. I'll use the below quote as an example.

Quote: Now that I take a good look her, she does not seem so unlike [myself]. She is a bit taller and her skin seems to hold an enviable natural tan, but her eyes are nearly as dark as mine own.

Edit: Now that I take a good look her, she doesn't seem so unlike me. She's a bit taller, and her skin seems to hold an enviable natural tan, but her eyes are nearly as dark as mine.

It's a small change, but it just feels more real. Good luck in the challenge!

Wow, that was very nice. I take it that new class must be coming along great! Great view from a victim, it was very original.

Can't wait for you to update Flight and Everything's Fine, looking forward to both.
