An everyday described like only you can do it, with thought detail and veiwpoint, and such a pleasantly drawn upheaval; the progression is flawless. Hazel and Hilary's relationship is the best thing; a lot's been said about children with deamons, not so much about adults. It's a very true point that people's deamons change over time. The bit about the tabbycat appearing and maybe speaking could be just one sentence; it's one of those ideas already in everybody's mind. You could talk more about people in different circumstances becoming aware of their deamons, even if it feels very good as a oneshot (actually the form of the title suggests you want to continue). Please write something else as soon as you can manage, now you've started again.
