Reviews for: The Borg Menace
Sue D. Nym 5/1/08 . chapter 1
Squee! I love the ickle red shirts.

Over the years, the clever little red shirt species developed complex survival techniques, such as no longer wearing red shirts. Dazed and confused, enemies no longer knew whom to kill! And that is the true nature of the Starfleet uniform change between NG and TOS.

Obviously there's no such confusion in your fanfic, to my delight. Aha, the easily respawning red shirts...

lol Yeah it is kinda strange how the Borg are always defeated so easily. The knowledge of trillions of species, ships that can adapt to virtually anything short of the universe imploding in on it, and the ability to instantly heal...

This piece of writing is a fabulous bit of fluff that makes several excellent statements about Voyager and pokes fun at some aspects of Star Trek that have been left very well-primed for it. You seemed to capture the essence of most characters’ personalities quite well, to the point that your sarcastic and comic representations of them were still believable within the context of those established in the cannon. I could totally see Tuvok wondering about Chakotay’s presence on the bridge, and being too respectful of authority to ever voice, or even admit to having, such an opinion. The romance between Seven and B’Elanna seemed a bit farfetched in the context of your story, and came off as your biggest plot hole, surprising in a story that has the Borg playing tag and giving hugs. I really liked the nod to the original series and the mortality rate of people wearing redshirts, even though Voyager’s crew has far less fatalities, and most of them come to people in yellow shirts… uniform upgrades and whatnot. The names you came up with were quite clever also, and really added to your story.

For a story this short, it was fabulous that you managed to make a complete episode, even including a reasonable and surprising ending. Using Q, one absurdity, to create and explain another was quite clever, and you’ve made an excellent point about the difference between the Borg as they appear in TNG—menacing and the ultimate threat—and Voyager—a minor nuisance that can be defeated with a few tactical tricks and minor injuries. It’s a very valid plot hole in the overall progression of the different series. Also, thank you for using consistent tenses, proper punctuation, interesting diction, and varied sentence structure; it allowed me to actually appreciate your story instead of being tremendously distracted by basic writing flaws.
