| Rosalyn Angel 2008-06-25 ch 1, | abuseI read KP Duty and Coming Clean many many years ago, and I remembered them so vividly that every time I wandered back into the fandom I looked for them. Unfortunately after my first read they had disappeared, and I was always disappointed to see them still gone. But just yesterday I had a random urge to read Kaiba fics, and I was browsing around for any that looked good, and lo! I found KP Duty! And Coming Clean! You can't imagine my glee. I was so excited to finally read them again. Even after so many years and my heighened awareness of good fiction, the stories are still amazing. Reading Kaiba's thought process, how he becomes more sexual in his mind and notices things more acutely but still scared to death about actually reaching out and touching them--oh gosh, I loved experiencing it. The dialogue is lovely, and I love the descriptions--at some points they just felt so poetic. (The scene at the beginning in the helicopter, describing everyone in the sun's light--fire elementals. That sticks in my head.) And little things like math formulas interjected here and there--things I don't really know about, like electrons in the sun and some theories--reinforce Kaiba's character and his genius. While keeping these two in-character in a developing relationship is a huge task, I admit I wasn't thinking about whether or not they were IC or not. These versions of them, /your/ versions of them, were just so gorgeous and tangible that "IC" didn't really matter to me. (Which isn't to say they weren't--well, they're really only IC when they're at each other's throats in the anime/manga--but for this situation, yes, I believed what they were doing.) Also, thankyouthankyouthankyou for being brave enough to not only write the rape (which was never actually written in KP Duty, but I like it better that way--like Kaiba, we only know what was told to us through a list of unjuries and Kurosuke's word) but the /aftermath/ of the rape which is severely neglected and overlooked. You handled it so beautifully, too. I'd be eager to read whatever else you've written in this arc, to see how Seto grows, but I understand if you never continue it. It's an old story, and you've moved on. If you ever do continue, though, I'd definitely be a reader. Thank you for putting these stories back up. I love them. -RA, out |
| darkokita 2008-06-03 ch 1, | abuseA friend sent me the url of your bio page and I've read all three fics (and the companion fic, Summoning Death), and I love them all. It would be nice if Elf would post it on ffnet, I'd like to add it to the C2 also. The challenge you left at the end of Snow Blind is interesting, but I do wish you'd consider carrying on with it. I enjoy not only your style but your characterizations and would be very irritated if someone else were to come along and screw it all up. |
| Chibi-the-small 2008-04-11 ch 1, | abuseWhat can I say that the first two reviews haven't said already. this is just WOW! Seto is just WOW I don't think I ever read a fanfic were Seto was IC to the core. its just so amazing the way you wrote this is its just really amazing. some how even though this is unfinished the last chapter is just fabulous to say the list that it doesn‘t even feel like it wasn‘t suppose to end that way. I don't think someone has ever capture Seto like you have. Really, truly marvelous work and I’ll anxiously await a update if you ever do decide to finish it. |
| Alcibiades 2008-04-02 ch 1, | abuseI want to express how much I appreciate being able to read this story once again. It's definitely one of the best Yu-Gi-Oh fan fictions ever. This should be required reading for anyone who wishes to tackle the subject properly. You've added many dimensions to each character that are simultaneously deep, enchanting, and faithful to the source material. I think the ultimate triumph of this work lies in the realistic portrayal of the concept of a relationship bore on shaky foundations. It was possible for me to experience the ups and downs without second guessing the scope of understanding and range of experience that you have for real relationships and the subtle wrinkles that separate individual traits that could otherwise be construed as the same; raw anger, jealousy, and insecurity often appear the same and even if they share the same root, they manifest in very different forms. Exploring each motivation and nuance must have been painstakingly difficult and I applaud you for doing it so thoroughly and well and sticking to it to the very end. Your new note makes me cautiously happy and I hope you do decide to at least complete this series though I suppose the ending of chapter five may be adequate. I'm not sure why you decided to leave the fandom since all the work you've posted radiates enthusiasm in every way and this series in particular elevates the meaning of fan fiction. Comprehensively capturing passion on paper is something that only happens if you enjoy doing it. Thanks for putting it up again. |
| Book of Doom 2008-03-29 ch 1, | abuseI have never quite loved any YGO fic like this one, and I'm glad that I saved it on my hard disk all those years ago before you took it down so I could read it over and over and over again. What makes this story a fantastic read is your portrayal of Kaiba; rarely does one encounter such a complete characterisation. The vulnerable young man who has had all kinds of hell thrown at him, the socially awkward teenager not quite sure of how to deal with his attraction to Jounouchi, the caring older brother who does his best to act as a parent for Mokuba, the prodigy behind the success of Kaiba Corp as a cutting-edge gaming company. I liked the last one in particular -- it was intriguing to see how Kaiba worked, how he got his inspiration. (Tantalus is a genius idea!) Of course, it was also fun when his thoughts constantly stray towards Jounouchi. ;) Anyway, I'm glad that you decided to put it up again, because even if it's still unfinished, these few chapters were a great ride. |
