SSG Michael B Jackson 2008-08-31 ch 8,	abuseIt looks like John managed to at partially mend the bridge that he'd accidentally burned, but I'd hazard to guess that the '10%' that Cameron pointed out as still being 'malfunctioning' are going to require more than 10% of John's time and effort to fix. It certainly looks to me as if Cameron has passed that 'teeter-totter' point in her intellectual complexity that marks the line between a clever machine and a truly sentient organism; unfortunately, it would be very hard to convince any of the resistance fighters of that and even harder to get them to accept her if they did. After all, Skynet itself is presumably sentient, but obviously not benevolent in any way. Convincing folks that Cameron was on their side might be very difficult indeed, especially after the latest incident whether it was her fault or not. All that being the case, I'm afraid John might be facing a very unpleasant choice soon. A 'great leader' can only command the loyalty of his troops so long as they respect him or her. Troops may continue to serve a commander they don't respect if they fear him or her or don't see any viable alternatives; but in that case they'll almost always turn on said leader at the first perceived opportunity. That being the case, John may soon have to make a decision between hanging on to his troops or hanging onto Cameron; I'm not sure which way he'll go on this but unfortunately for him, I think I know which way he'll need to go if he wants the human race to have a second chance. To borrow a phrase recently made popular again by another hit sci-fi show, "Sine Qua Non" =) -"He rubbed his forehead against her shoulder, an unconscious gesture of submission" Beautiful. -"Why don't you trust me John?" over and over. You never see John's reply coming. Again, great work here. -"Help me forget." Wooho. Always great to read your work dakota. I'll be on the lookout for more of this =)

SSG Michael B Jackson 2008-08-25 ch 7,	abuseWell, it looks like John's little order just blew up in his face; hopefully he'll learn something from that. When you're the guy in charge and lives depend on you, you have to seriously think things out before you throw a 'blanket statement' like that one out. He'd probably have been a lot better off to have given her some 'rules of engagement' to follow (use deadly force only in self-defense or in defense of others and use the least amount of force necessary to resolve a situation when possible etc...) but I guess he wasn't exactly thinking rationally at the time. Still, it sounds like he needs to pull his head out, so to speak, if he's going to be the legendary 'Savior of Mankind'. Oh, and just a personal opinion, but I've always been a sci-fi fan, and that question about 'What's human and what's not' has always fascinated me. I don't think Cameron is human, per se, but it certainly looks like she's become a sentient being; a home-grown 'alien' of sorts. She thinks as well as (or better than) a human being but not LIKE a human being. As I see it, that's a trait that potentially exists in any sufficiently complex neural network, human or otherwise and I don't think that the human survivors understand this. But then again, they just got their asses handed to them by the machines so I don't suppose they'd be in any mind-frame to think those kind of thoughts. Oh, and of course, good job so far. I'm really enjoying this and I hope you'll continue soon; you're take on these characters is great. Mike Jackson
