Boggy 2008-05-18 . chapter 1Eviscerating fangirls is easy (I mean, come on—look at the MATERIAL we have to work with). A decent story is FAR more constructive (for both you and the fanbase) than exacting revenge against a group of numbnuts who are lucky enough to SPELL characterization, let alone properly implement it into a story. So, kudos for taking the high road.
One of the key components of a GOOD story (whatever the fandom) is RESPECT. Respect for the story, respect for the characters, and respect for ourselves as authors. And the level of respect demonstrated here literally LEAPS off the computer screen. Which says to me, this author isn't simply a talented writer, but one who possesses more than a juvenile understanding (which is all the average author can produce) of the characters and story. This is a writer who rightfully deserves the title of "author." Because you're not being buried beneath piles and piles of "masturbatory fangirl wank."
I like how vulnerable the central characters are. Yet, those vulnerabilities are what humanizes them, forces them to use "what they have" to make the most of a very desperate situation. Nasuti has her resourcefulness and street smarts; Jun has his childlike intuition and wit. The characters have limitations, boundaries, but are amazingly accomplished. They can't slice mountains in half with a katana or leap tall buildings in a single bound. But hey, they can gas up the car and gather supplies and keep a hopeful attitude for the people risking their asses to save the world. And that very "regularness" is a reminder of what our heroes are fighting for.
I remember smirking at how either Seiji or Ryo got the front seat, and laughing when Nasuti kept sampling cosmetics at the grocery store. I felt sad knowing Nasuti's grandfather had died, and anxious wondering if and when Jun's parents might be killed. And I love any story that recognizes SeijixNasuti is love. And that Mary!Sue!xSeiji is not.
This story will likely NEVER see past 10 reviews. Never have the praise or recognition is deserves. And the fangirl masses will continue to grow, unleashing their stupidity onto the unsuspecting masses. And you'll forever be looked upon as that "elitist bitch" with her "nit-picky obsession with canon." But at the end of the day, you're the one with the good story, and you're the one with the clear conscience.
Keep writing, sweetie. Remember, there ARE those of us who know better. |
Nix Entente 2008-04-15 . chapter 1I love you for writing this. Ully, despite his obnoxious English voice, has always been one of my favorite kid characters ever. I love what you've done with his here. It's so nice to see him as a more...aware young boy, if not very mature. Mia is amazing in this too. Hell, all of the characterizations are win. Fantastic job with this. |
