WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot 2009-05-20 . chapter 48Nice ending to a ripping story. You wrote a great Quidditch match here, and loved the echo back to Harry and Ginny with Rob and Rose. Sure it took them 48 chapters to get there LOL!! But I really do like how you built them up.
Great work, Rust! |
Kittyboosmom 2009-05-15 . chapter 48Excellent conclusion to a great story. Can't wait fir the next one. |
Inverarity 2009-05-15 . chapter 48Echoes of Harry and Ginny, indeed.
A long story that managed to capture my interest and make me interested in the fate of individual characters, even though at times there was a bit of name overload. This story started out seeming like it would be addressing some of those lingering issues after DH, but turned into more of a straightforward adventure/alien invasion crossover. That definitely added to the excitement, but as you know, I like character development as much as action, so I really found myself more interested in how Bianca got the way she did, and what Scorpius's home life is like, and how will this generation of kids who saw so much bloodshed and carnage deal with it in the future, than I was about where entire universes of fictional beings come from, or whether Harry and the Ministry really believed (again) that they could get rid of the Stacyx forever with one big explosion.
Robert and Rose do make a nice couple, though given how much I dislike Rowling's "Everyone marries their high school sweetheart" moral, I'm pretty indifferent to seeing them together in future stories. I'm not sure where you could go from here, though -- I think after two Stacyx invasions, Airwaves War I would be a bit repetitive. James and Albus may have adventures of their own ahead of them, but any adventures for them at Hogwarts following this would be either anticlimactic or over-the-top.
I don't know what you have planned for the future, but I'd like to see a return to your American setting, and/or maybe a story about Cecilia, from Air of Disharmony. A story from a Slytherin's perspective would be quite a change of pace! Or maybe from her kids' perspective. Maybe she never returned to England, and had little American Slytherins instead... |
WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot 2009-05-11 . chapter 47Rob's a prat... but believably so at that age. That breakup with Lucida was, well... it was very realistic, in my opinion. Of course he falls back on the old "It isn't you," line, and the whole liking someone else--yeah, at least he's honest. But still. Never really dug Lucida but the break up got to me ;-)
Glad that James and Albus are reconnecting in the wake of the battle. I like how you developed their relationship in this story. It was very convincing.
And Rose and Robert: good on her for stepping back and not stampeding into anything with him. Take it slow and steady, and have some time to get past the break up with Lucida. I really do love your version of Rose.
Very good work! |
WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot 2009-05-11 . chapter 46Very good fall out chapter.
You hit some really good notes with Robert and Rose and their observations not only of the rest of the school in the aftermath of the attack, but their own personal observations about themselves and each other. Carpe diem Robert! He does need to seize the day and do what he needs to do to settle the matter with Rose and Lucida. You also managed to add a layer of Uptight Wright too; I can buy that's how he let himself manifest his crush on Rose because of the personality you established. In fact, as I was reading this, since the story itself has calmed down from the earlier attacks, I went back to the earlier chapters and thought that the way you had established this version of Hogwarts was quite good. Really well developed with how you drew from canon and what little we know of the next generation.
Great work! |
Inverarity 2009-05-11 . chapter 47I actually found all the teenage melodrama very amusing and pretty true to life, in that kids tend to handle these things very badly and immaturely, but that doesn't diminish the fact that they're in real pain (something adults often forget when they dismiss teen romances as "puppy love").
Albus, you really shouldn't listen to your brother, he's a prat. Capitalizing on your "hero" status...tsk tsk. James could get away with that, but he's got a great big head.
"It's not you, it's me." Poor Robert, making every classic mistake in the book.
At least Rose has some sense. Relationships born during a crisis are rarely long-lasting, plus this is the very definition of a rebound. Plus if she and Robert are snogging a day after he broke up with Lucida, it won't just be Peeves saying nasty things about them.
I suspect that once the heartbreak fades, though, Robert and Lucida will be friends again.
I have to say, Robert and Rose don't actually seem to have a lot of chemistry to me, though I'm sure they may be happy dating for a while. But then, I thought Rowling did a lousy job building the Harry/Ginny relationship. (I'm not a shipper and don't really care who ends up with who, I just didn't buy Rowling's claim that they're "soulmates" when we never saw any signs of that in the books.)
So the next chapter had better not be an Epilogue nineteen years later with Rose and Roberts' kids going off to Hogwarts. :P |
Kittyboosmom 2009-05-10 . chapter 47Good job with the breakup. Thanks for doing it from the guy's point of view, rather than delving into Lucida's feelings. As for Rose, you did the common sense thing with her. I learned the same thing watching my friends go through this stuff when I was a kid--never get involved with a guy on the rebound. Definitely a bad move!
Anyhow, definitely an excellent chapter. |
Kittyboosmom 2009-05-10 . chapter 46Good chapter, as usual. Your action chapters are excellent, but you really have a talent for getting into the heart of your characters outside of the battles. I really enjoyed this chapter. Robert's quandry about Rose vs Lucida is a perfect example that not only does life go on, but it stays complicated.
Have a great week. |
Inverarity 2009-05-09 . chapter 46I am glad you didn't kill off Lucida -- I was afraid you might take the easy way out, but nope, Robert will have to man up, as his father said.
Considering how many of them there are, the Weasleys do seem to get off relatively lightly -- only one casualty per war. A lot of families lose a lot more than that. I have to admit, though, Cynthia was such a minor character in the story (I could not immediately remember who her parents were or how old she was) that it was hard to feel emotionally invested in her, so I was actually more affected by Wright's sacrifice and the deaths of Seamus and Katie. And, for that matter, Bianca (who I am still convinced must have had some sort of really twisted, traumatic childhood to make her that crazy).
Out of 46 casualties, I'd be surprised if there weren't at least one ghost who decided to stay behind.
So there isn't much left to wrap up here, other than resolving the Rose/Lucida/Robert triangle -- is the next chapter the last? |
Kittyboosmom 2009-05-08 . chapter 45Knew you had to kill someone off, just wasn't sure who was going. Thanks for not killing off George. That generation lost enough people.
Seriously, that was a good chapter. There are some things that even magic can't heal. (Hmm, nice line--have to use it sometime--lol). You did a great job with the bedside goings on, especially with Albus' memory of Cynthia helping him out in his first year.
Have a great weekend. |
WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot 2009-05-08 . chapter 45(very quick note: I went back to Chapter 24: Schism, I think it was, to look at that argument between James and Cynthia. Yeah... it was bad then, even worse now)
Wow. That was awful. Not your writing, but watching/reading the Weasleys go through that again. I wish JKR had spent a little more time on the reactions to Fred's death as well as Remus and Tonks. She was just a cool chick. Really seemed to have taken after her dad. Which... I can't believe you did that to Charlie!
I think I spotted "Victorie"... I didn't know whether you meant Victoire, but just wanted to make sure it was caught, just in case :-D
Now this makes me wonder how many more chapters you've got the story planned out for. Because it does seem like we're really at the end, but I would love to see the fallout from the death, particularly Cynthia's. They were just kids, after all, caught up in yet another war. I'll keep reading, regardless. Pretty much addicted to this tale.
This is just making me think about writing out the Battle of Hogwarts, with a more complete body count. Man that's depressing.
Great work. Oh, but one more thing... by Nargles, did Luna mean she could tell Manny Ramirez had hCG? That 50 game suspension's insane; I can't help but think our boys Dodged a bullet. Er, no pun intended. |
teacher123 2009-05-07 . chapter 45This has to be the saddest chapter. I cried the whole time. Please update soon. :) |
Inverarity 2009-05-06 . chapter 44I wonder if the term "PTSD" has entered the wizarding world yet.
Although I'd like to think that a Minister who could have prevented a tragedy like this and didn't would be sacked immediately if the public found out, the real world suggests otherwise.
So, more casualties... I wonder who. I'm betting on a Weasley or two. And I notice that Lucida was conspicuously absent from this chapter. |
teacher123 2009-05-04 . chapter 44Please don't leave me hanging. Why do they have to go to the hospital wing? Please update soon. :) |
Kittyboosmom 2009-05-03 . chapter 44Aw, just when I thought the worst was over, you had to hit with the nasty cliffhanger! Who's dead now, I wonder. Anyway, really good chapter. Nice comedown after all the garbage hitting the fan. Looking forward to the next chapter.
Have a great week. |
