If Luke had died then Leia would have been called upon to rebuild the Jedi Order. She would also have to deal with lossing her brother so soon after finding him. It would be interesting for you to contrast her grief at her friend's death and her grief at her brother's death. Just some ideas since your well is suffering from drought I thought I'd share from mine.
