Most characters that rebel against their parents are ungrateful and angry at their parents for a very dumb reason. It makes it far more easier to sympatheize with her and understand her character a little better when she expresses a genuine love for her parents. I also think it makes her character's point make more sense. If she hated her parents, why would she care? It's good character development. I also like how you mentioned Chip. You should really bring him back! But I think you should introduce a subplot, we all know what the secret is. But if you add something we don't know, like another mystery or subplot (As I said before) the audience would be able to relate to her already well potrayed confusion.
