Withdrawn 2008-08-04 . chapter 1That was... something else. The story type, if I'm to really really overly simplify for a moment, of 'the rookie nine see Naruto's memories/how brutal his life was' isn't too uncommon, but then, I suppose that it's because of the fact that it's so effective that you see that story type repeated so often... either way, that's not really important and just me thinking aloud. What's more important is that you took that fairly common type, and you presented it in a fascinating way, one that I'd never really seen before. You not only managed to get in random moments for every other character out of the rookie 9 save of course Sasuke, but the memories chosen, the presentation... and the reactions. Plus you threw in the 'why does Naruto wear orange?' bit, so that's a win. Honestly you managed to reasonably and without making it feel forced work into a single one-shot enough characterization and development to fill a multi-chapter story. This is just really good. Plus I love the stories where Naruto's friends get Naruto's unhappy child-hood rubbed in their faces, a lot of them tend to, especially early on in the series (so Chuunin exam time) give Naruto way too little credit considering the kind of life he must have lead, and their contributions to that life... I dunno, I just like it when they realize exactly how awesome Naruto is because of what he's gone through... if that makes any sense. It's not like Naruto would be less of a hero if he hadn't suffered like he had necessarily, it's just that the fact that he did suffer like that and came out the way he did really says something about his strength of will, and his strength of heart. But then again he's fictional, so it doesn't really count... drat. My idiotic ramblings that indicate a need of sleep aside, this was awesome, and I really liked it. It just... it honestly had everything, the entire spectrum of humor and tragedy and random and unremarkable (Choji's crisps and Shino's glasses there) along with the more mundane tragedies of, say, Sakura's home life... that one was actually really good by the way. Either way I'm blabbering again: this rocked, 'nuff said. |
Facing Fear 2008-07-11 . chapter 1Only one review (not including this)? Pathetic, this is a great one-shot that should have more than one. The emotion, imagery, and the light humor in there, were all so written perfectly.
Maybe not a lot of people read this because there's no character specifications (the "Naruto U. & someone else"). I suggest adding that.
I like that concept of memory watching, the memory seive and stuff was awesome.
That was mean, the Hinata memory (Kiba left no lasting impression on me), I felt the anguish in there, when he said those words. Wow... Shikamaru and Temari memory was a bit personal... lol, "they knew what was coming".
Whoa, Ino's memory was full of controversy, her grandfather having an affair, then poisoning her grandmother. I liked that story within a story. Lol, Shino was pretty funny, always wearing those glasses.
But then, Naruto's memory came. That was horrible, it gave me a degree of sickness in the pit of my stomach. It was because it was written well, and the imagery was etched into my head - powerful.
But there's a small mistake, it says that Kazuki began working on his arm, but then it said he noticed Naruto's stomach stopped bleeding, so he switched to his arm. You wrote about healing Naruto's arm twice. Just a small note about that mistake.
Wow... I liked how you implemented a story in why Naruto wears orange. It was deep, and meaningful, just like Shikamaru summarized - to honour a hero. It's not like a random fic, where it says Naruto wears orange because it makes him stand out, this one has a deep memory and event connected to it. I loved that.
That was a nice ending, tragic, but nice nontheless. It seems as though Kazuki understands the nature of the sealing, and is one of the few people that actually likes Naruto. His letter to him proves that.
Oh, just a question: how old are they? And did Kiba control EVERY memory that they saw?
I suggest you continue, but I doubt you will, seeing as there's no one else reviewing. |
