2008-12-11 . chapter 20
your stories are amazing, and as has been said before, i'm not really a big fan of AU stories, but this one was wonderful..
you portrayed the characters perfectly, and i love how much self control Allan had to do with Djaq, just showed how much of a good person he is.. and Will and Djaq were absolutely perfect (as they are) and i just loved it!!

I can't believe it's taken me this long to review this! Well, I actually I do, it's because I usually avoid AU fics, but this was just great. I was sucked in from the first chapter, and it certainly didn't hurt that you were writing about my favourite three characters of all time.

I suppose this was mostly a love story and a coming-of-age story, and the thing that made it so unique was that you simply let Will and Djaq fall in love with each other. There were no contrived arguments or misunderstandings that we see all the time in awful Hollywood "romances", and even things that could have been a viable obstacle to true love (Allan, the difference in religion/race, and even the war itself) are just breezed through by the couple. Because they love each other too much to let anything phase them, making this one of the best love stories I've ever read.

And then there was Allan, and your version of him nearly broke my heart. I think it's right what you said, that he's rather immature, and that's why he missed out on Djaq this time around, but you kept little touches that were just beautiful: like giving her the shoes before leaving, or having him learn her secret all on his own, and (sob) carrying a picture of her through the war - and that little kiss she gives him (my shipper heart squealed for joy). And the way he always barges in on the couple, even into their bedroom - I'm not sure if it was your intention, but I got the distinct impression that he was trying to live vicariously through the happy couple, knowing that they had something very special together that he could never quite be a part of. And I kinda like the way you didn't shove in a random love-interest for Allan toward the end of the story: once you meet Djaq, you can't go back.

Um what else? I loved all the WWII details (like drawing the seams), and the way you bring out the personalities of minor characters on the show, particularly Luke and Aunt Annie (who never even APPEARED on the show!) She was a great character.

Okay, this is already an essay (I wished I'd found this story before it was finished and put it on alert!) so I'll finish up by saying, yes, I WAS teary-eyed by the finished.

I have been meaning to read this story for a while now, but I am not a big WWII fan nor am I much for AU.Well, I finally starting reading it two days ago and it was wonderful.Really!I'm sure that I don't have to tell you that, considering all of the reviews you've gotten, but I really loved the whole thing.I could not stop reading it.You're a great writer and it was a lot of fun to have Djaq, Will, and Allan out of the forest for a bit.And your depiction of the dynamic between the three of them was very realistic.I can't tell you enough how brilliant this story has been and how much I have enjoyed reading it.I wish I had started it sooner.Great job. Thanks for a fabulous tale.

Ah, this epilogue did come to me as a bit of a surprise, but I'm glad you wrote it and posted it!
Loved it...aah, can't believe that we've seen the three of them, Alan, Will and Djaq grow up from young teenagers to adults, it was such a lovely story and such a lovely ending!
Looking forward to seeing more of your work, as always, it was excellent!
Keep up the good work and KEEP writing...don't know what FanFiction would do without you!

I did a double take when I saw the update for this chapter in my mailbox. I am so glad for another chapter though. It makes the ending slightly less bittersweet, but not stagnant since they are moving onto new beginnings away from Nottingham. V. lovely. Thank you again for this story. It is a definite favourite! P.S. Way to go for being a "smultz" - I think you called it that - at the end of this chapter. Appreciation and emotion can be v. good. Later days..

Oh my god! I am clapping, squeeing, pratically screaming! But I am also sad that it had to end! I've been reading this for a while, as it is SO long (Not complaining!) and now it's finshed :( That really sucks. But apart from that... this is totally amazing! I loved everything, the start, the situation, the fluff, the pairings... EEK! Totally enjoyed reading it (Believe me, if I didn't, I would of given up long ago!) and I shall go and explore a few more of your fics!
You have totally made my day... well, days, as I started reading this... yesterday, or the day before, I cant remember... and the fluff was unbelievable! Eek I was totally melting... and even though the ending seemed awkward to write, I love the way you went about it! Especially the poem at the end! ^-^ Is that yours?
All in all, 100% fantastic!

aw... wonderful ending. I loved the fact that it wasn't "happily ever after" b/c it wouldn't have been realistic. But you managed to make it light without being overly happy or overly dramatic. Great great story as a whole - and I have to say; I'm gonna miss seeing this updated every friday. Good job. :)

I would simply like to say that you are TRULY, one of the BEST writers I have EVER come across, and Home Fires is one of my absolute favourite stories ever! (And that's quite something considering how many books I've read throughout the years...)

Not only do you have an incredible command of the english language, but you also have that unique gift of being able to touch an audience with your words and characters...Will, Djaq, Allan & the war...you've brought them all to life in a way that no one else could have, and you've given us readers something that will last with us forever.

I will be following your work with keen interest. Thank you for such a touching, heart-warming tale...

That was a simply lovely ending. And I love how you used that line from MASH! MASH is one of my earlier passions. I agree with you with regards to the happily ever after endings, simply having those you love and therefore being happy is enough. I hope to see more stories of yours on fanfiction. This one was a delight to read and I liked your writing style. And the amount of description really gave it an extra edge. This has been quite the saga and as bittersweet as it is to see it end, I cannot help but feel happy for Djac, Will and Allan as they face the new, uncertain world. You captured the mood and emotions so well. Anyway, thank you again and I really do hope to see more of your work in the future. Best of luck!

Wonderfully poignant ending. Djaq was indeed right. I think u should do more AU fiction. You seem to have a knack for it. I would love for you to read mine and let me know what you think? 'Jealousy thy name is will'
Thanks

2008-09-19 . chapter 20
4 months later...we come to an end to this amazing story.
First of all, I'd like to congratulate you on completing this story, not a lot of authors do actually complete stories which has been going for 4 MONTHS! Well done!
Now, let's begin with this extra long review that I have for you. Sorry if I ramble on...
I was sitting in history today and, being as I always am, pretty bored, I was glancing around the classroom thinking, oh its friday today then I remembered, as I do every friday...HOME FIRES! The last chapter! and then soon as I got home, rushed upstairs to read it.
What can I say?
I came into the story about 4 chapters into it I think or maybe more, not too sure, and from the start I have loved it!
I have waited very impatiently every week just to see it posted and to read it and I've loved it and fair play to you, you've stuck to the posting a chapter once a week and posted us a very anticipated chapter, as promised, every friday. It's easily my favourite story on fan fiction, I've loved every chapter of it.
I am slightly amazed by your writing and how well you've combined my favourite tv show, Robin Hood with such a crackin' time in history. It has been truly an amazing story to read and I've really really enjoyed how each character has his/hers position in the war.
I've loved your portrayal of the characters, including Alan, Djaq and Marian, all of them have been amazingly written and so much like how I would imagine them to be.
I've loved the little sarcastic quips from Lukey, Djaq and Will, this story has had me laughing my head off.
I will certainly miss this story, but I have vowed to, whenever I'm in need of a good (and I'd like to emphasise the word good) story to read, I will always come back to reread home fires.
Now, one thing that attracts readers to stories is good story plots but, I admit, I love a good plot, but the English also has to be accurate for me and your writting skils, your english, everything is amazing with you!
You have kept me reading and you have had me hooked from the beginning.
I cannot repeat how much I have loved this story and how well it is written.
I would love to see more stories of yours of different times and era's up here on Fan Fiction and maybe a story containing Robin and Marian because although there wasn't a hell of a lot of my two favourite characters in your story, I still loved the little mentions of them and their parts in the chapters
I would really love it if you wrote a story about them two.
Excellent job, keep up the good work and I hope to see more of your stories in the future for I love your work!

Now, all I have left to say is, thank you so much for this amazingly well-written story and for actually keeping me interested for four months...I'm normally a very difficult person to keep my attention on something that has gone on for so long, but I've thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thank you again :)

This is the perfect ending to an absolutely wonderful story. I'm really not sure what else can possibly be said about it, except to say how much I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. So thanks for that =)

Wow, let me start by saying that you are one heck of a writer! I just finished reading the story so far and all I have to say is wow!! You are great at narrative! My parents grew up in Europe during WW2 and the way you describe things is exactly the way they described it to me. I would be honored if you would read my story "Jealousy thy name is Will" and let me know what you think! I really enjoyed your story, I mean wow! I love the fact that you made it during WW2, it shows great imagination. Keep it up! Can't wait to read more. Thanks for letting me know where to find your stories. I asked you once at the LJ forum and you told me to find your smut stories here!
