Lion in the Land 2010-01-07 . chapter 31Wow, a whole chapter and what? Only like two small paragraphs of any action. And still, a very interesting read. What I actually like best about this story are the personal interactions. You've done them well from the very beginning, even amidst the action, and having a whole chapter dedicated to these things was a nice treat.
Do you realize what else you're doing? You're carrying on a Hellsing fic without Alucard and Seras -- and you're doing a splendid job of it! Congratulations. :)
Some brief comments on specifics:
Oh YES, Zohall -- leave that shirt open. ;)
Loved the dynamic between Integra and Uchideshi. I truly enjoy seeing her all bent out of shape.
That Leon has some major cajones, bringing that up with the Hellsing heir. It's nice to see that she respects him for it. I got a kick out of him offering her a piece of gum. That was precious. I'm glad that you handled the explanation at the bar off screen, but it might be really fun to see Integra and Leon tie one on together at some point. :D
Ah, for Zohall, knowledge about his power seemed to led to better control of it. (I see you have a plausible explanation for the glowing eyes.)
As you can see by the delay in my review, I am very busy these days, servant...and yet you give me homework! Fine, here's what I have for this chapter:
Uchideshi = student
Muradin - I don't know on this one. All I could find was World of Warcraft stuff, which leaves me completely confused.
You must remind me -- which one means "scissors"? (tee hee)
Are you really going to go to that kon thing in costume? I love that so much!!

Master of the Boot 2010-01-06 . chapter 31I've also seen Sherlock Holmes, it rocked. And I saw the new Hellsing OVA! It rocked beyond all belief, next OVA . . . comes the Vatican :)
FIrst things first. Here's my favorite quote from last chapter, "When I get back . . . you suck!" That made me laugh. IT really did.
But for this chapter now. This chapter is good. Despite the lack of fighting, there is quite a bit of action in the form of character development. you've improved on conveying character development since the start of this adventure. I can't wait for Saturday.
I rather liked the talk that Leon had with Integra. It's good to see Integra get the respect she deserves. Because while it took me a while to warm up to her, I have warmed up. When Leon described zohall, the description reminded me of my brother without the zombie apocalypse. IT's true, in hindsight they do have some similarities.
The old man with the potions was a lot of fun, he provided some good comic relief. Especially when he butted heads with Integra. The conversatoin with Inuyasha was really great. It gave me a good deal of insight into Inuyasha's character since I've only seen a few episodes. Great way to stay in character and to keep things fun.
I loved Arnie coming in to take your clothes. That's the kind of randomness that I adore. :)

Q_Q
I've been following both stories from the start and I have to say, you're a great writer. Every time you update I'm like, "YES YOU UPDATED FINALLY!" Then I proceed to sit at my computer with my eyes glued to the screen until I'm done reading the new chapter. Keep up the good work and for the love of god... Finish Men of War... When you finish this story. Or I will cry. And you don't want me to cry, DO YOU? No, I thought not.
Also, if you had given Couch chocolate and he might have prevented that Charger from... You know... -winces-

Master of the Boot 2010-01-01 . chapter 30It's good to see your work again. Happy New year dude! :) And a whole decade has passed. Amazing isn't it? I think that this chapter was the perfect way to celebrate new years day after the drinking and partying of new years eve.
I had fun with this, I had a great deal of fun tonight. I had a blast with Edward Towers; you're getting better and better at writing that guy. It's amazing to see him intereacting with Naraku interact. Two evil characters that go through a song and dance in which neither one of them reveals his inner self. I had a good long chuckle when Towers had a giggle fit and then he has to strenuously pull himself back up again. It would have been hilarious if he'd needed to ask Naraku for help getting up, "Uh-oh, I screwed myself up. Naraku, lend me a hand."
The Zohall moments are getting better. I like the direction that you're taking the character. I can imagine his despair at realizing the importance of the sword. All that his realtionship with Integra needs now is a bit of sarcasm. You gave those two some seriously stellar dialogue, but this soup needs one final ingrediient. For example, Integra gets so mad at Zohall that she says something to him that she didn't mean to say. For example, "If you continue with your insubordination I will torture you with my extensive collection of vibrators." "What?" "Nothing, I didn't say that!"
Leon and Shippo are great. They're like brothers. I loved when Shippo had to ask Leon what composure was. That little guy is a stitch :) And Leon's gun practice and lessons were ever so thrilling. It's as thrilling as some batles.
And the New years eve bash with all of your characters was truly hilarious. Those ending bits are your trademark and I hope that you never stop doing those things. Show your story the same kind of creativity that you use in your little end of chapter skits.
I liked how Wesker's car was totallyed. That is so how he would react LOL! And I'm also pumped for Left 4 Dead 2.

Lion in the Land 2010-01-01 . chapter 30Bzy baby! Happy New Year. :)
I do so love your introductory paragraphs that plunge us right into the HSWC universe. "Blackwind Island was anything but myth or bedtime story; it was worse. It was real." Awesome.
The whole set up with the collection of corpsified minions was very grim, and I really liked the image of the underwater march, very Pirates of the Caribbean (of which all three of my DVDs are missing! I am SO not happy about that). It was very good to get a look at what is going on with Towers. You did a nice job describing his current power and his loss of humanity. I also found the distrust among the big players on the island very interesting...and I hope that's something that will work in favor of our protagonists.
And then we get a nicely timed break from that heaviness with the switch to Zohall and Inuyasha bickering and Leon having some fun with the other demons. One thing -- it would be sort of nice to have some sort of dilineation when you're switching scenes, like a hard line or centered asterisks or something. The switches are pretty apparent, so it's only a split second of confusion, but still.
What's up with the mushrooms? That seems like something from an old school video game. That was so funny when Miroku fired Leon's gun. The "yelping slightly" cracked me up. :D
How very sweet of Zohall to take his shirt off again. ;) Quite cute how flustered that made Integra. The whole interaction between those two and then their residual frustration was well done. It's just great how you give us insights into the characters from all angles.
Towards the end, a huge chunk of the chapter suddenly goes into bold type. Was that intentional, or an error in formatting?
Well, we're really getting down to it with Lady Kaede's revelations to Zohall about Gleam. I can see why he'd be bummed out to find out that it's coming from something outside of him. But still -- the green eyes -- it's got to be part him, too, right? It is very interesting to watch this boy grow up and learn about himself. Hm, I'm wondering about the significance of the furry animals and winter...?
So, thirty chapters, several character perspectives, dozens of differing scenes and situations, and yet there is a common thread through all of it. Every scene, every new development seems to be working toward the same end. There is a remarkable cohesiveness to all the different moving parts here, and that is not an easy thing to accomplish in a project of this scope. Young servant, your master is impressed.
Did I hear you right in your message that we can be expecting regular updates over the next month? Ya-hoo!

 Darth Demon2 2010-01-01 . chapter 30Kickass update...and a happy New Year |
FORD B 2009-11-28 . chapter 29Great to see an update and it was a good chapter. I was wondering why it took so long. Wish I could play Fallout 3 too. As for the lazy part, I am the same unfortunately so we're both in trouble on that regard. I haven't updated in months and people are emailing me about it.
Anyway, as always, looking forward to the next part! |
Arbl A-17 2009-11-26 . chapter 29good story! it is nice to see a completely original character amidst a bunch of anime and game characters. nice plot adding, by the way. having the leader of the guardsmen having locked the emperor in his palace. its shit like that that makes a good story. and as for men of war, dont rush. a good idea comes by every now and then. just be sure to include more stuff about hoffman and the strange object that arrived in system that you briefly mentioned. an introductory to whoever or whatever's up there would make a decent chapter. but keep doing good! and dont blow your head up by thinking too hard in college!
Arbl A-17 |
Lion in the Land 2009-11-24 . chapter 29Aw, you're hardly a lazy bum -- you simply have your priorities straight, and I for one am glad to hear that college is giving you such a good workout. ;)
Now, onto that chapter! First, I like how you started the chapter focused on Integra. Or shall I say Blondie? *snicker* It was great to see her get all huffy. And I also liked Shippo's comments about her being mean and inconsiderate while Leon tried to imagine her various hobbies. The dog breeding competitions w/ Alucard and Seras as her pets was my favourite. :) You just do such a good job showing that woman's various dimensions and how she's interpreted by others.
I also like the way you used Leon to walk into the first scene and then we follow him along to the next. He wasn't a key role in either of them, but he transitioned us there and provided some excellent color commentary. “Oh… that is a problem,” Haha.
That scene where Leon is trying to figure out what the hell is going on with Inuyasha's white hair bobbing up and down was so funny. Esepcially when we see what Zohall's doing and he's so pissed about it. “You weren’t COUNTING!?!?” And he was doing these incredibly manly pushups w-without his sh-sh-shirt on. Oh my. Such a lovely image. God bless you, Bzy. ;P
And then the fight itself was so intense. He would not have been able to train like that with anyone but Inuyasha, because only he would actually be willing to KILL him if that's what it took. I completely dig the energy and fearlessness of both combatants. My heart was beating right along with the rest of the other spectators. Leon's awe at what his little "brother" can do was cool to see. And watching Zohall somewhat harness his power and use it was nothing short of awesome.
Lastly, I just love the camaraderie between Leon and Shippo -- it's just adorable. '“…hoo-ly shit,” Leon said, cupping Shippos ears just before uttering the swear.' I mean, that's just so cute!!
And then you end it all with a twist and the townsfolk plotting a coup. Well, it was nice to be back, and I'll keep coming back, no matter how long it takes ya -- good things are worth the wait.
