To call this a very sweet story somehow feels like a pitiful understatement.

On the surface, it is already a beautiful telling of a deep bond of friendship between the characters. Scratch the surface and there's an even more beautiful insight into the complex relationships between fathers and children. And best of all, you kept it simple.

I suspect this would resonate with many readers who would a difficult relationship with their own fathers, including myself.

This would have been a really sneaky way of incorporating some of the best moments from Jeri Taylor's book into the show. Too bad they didn't think of it and you had to do it, but better late in fanon than never in canon! I love Tom bursting into tears. It's so OOC for what we expect, but we all have those moments sometimes, and it's refreshing to see our superheroes humanized once in a while.

You would think that they would have an extra bond just with their shared past :) or at least parents

Touching story. Really nice that Tom can go to Janeway to help clear up some emotional issues. Nice that Janeway understood and helped.
