Oh. Fantastically written. I love stories about the time when Dean wasn't talking (I admit, I've written one myself) and (I've also got to admit) this is one the best I've read. Word choice was perfect. Well done.

Nice work! Actually got me sympathizing with John, which is no mean feat--loved your description of Dean, which still applies today: "a baffling mix of tough and delicate, independent and needy, prickly and soft."
