This is a beautiful angsty story. Love that she's disgusted with him, that he reminds her of Wayne, but she can't help letting him lean on her and going back to his apartment. This is my favorite exchange:

"Don't what, Jack?...Don't watch you throw your life away? Don't find out what you're doing to yourself? Don't think about who you used to be? God, Jack, you were --”

His gaze darkens and he snatches the piece of paper from her grip, holding her wrist as he does, his face inches from hers. “And who were you, Kate?”

Love that it brings up the good and bad memories for her, and how the conversation ends with them on the floor in a sweaty clinch. And the end with her walking out is perfect.

What a powerful, bittersweet piece. I like it a lot. There's a lot of impact in your style, the sentences clean and to the point, the imagery vivid and engaging and the characters' voices distinctive. I love how you constructed the fic out of impressions, it brings out a poetic quality as it emphasizes and magnifies certain emotions the characters feel while leaving out the irrelevant descriptions that would be just weeds here. That's very impressive and very admireable.
There's such strong aftertaste of bitterness and disappointment towards the end of the story but also immense longing as Jack and Kate try to reach out to each other, blindly searching for what is lost. The wild sex is a perfect highlight of this emptiness. I get a feeling they're both frightened and lonely and needy but just can't get through to the other, realizing that they never even knew each other that well. But I think they do, they know the core of what drives the other, they're just too caught up in own insecurities to see it.
Great stuff, I love me some delving into the dark corners of Jack's mind and I love that you made Kate equally haunted too.
Thank you for sharing! I'll make sure to take time to read your other works.
