It's rather short for a first chapter, and doesn't have much depth, plot-wise or character-wise. There's no sense of pull factor to draw my interest to subsequent chapters here.

Well, it's somewhat good, but I think you should write longer chapters and add more adjectives, you're leaving the looks of your characters to our minds.
