2008-12-12 . chapter 7
Hey Tidia, I finally got a chance to get into reading again and catch up on the Brotherhood stories. Like I told Ridley, I moved to Austin, TX in August and it's taken me a few months to settle in. I really enjoyed this story, even if it did strike me as a little different than y'all's standard fare. I do love how much y'all make mention of Southern places - being from the South myself. And it was nice to see Caleb and Sam getting along better in this story, and keeping up with there counterparts. The epilogue was bittersweet - I'm glad they end up happy, but it's sad for me to ever imagine them getting old! And it was sad to me that Sam ends up divorced - but glad that Josh finally found his way into the cool crowd - I bet he's a way better father than Harland ever was. Can't wait to see where things go next in In Victus! Thanks for all your hard work, and sorry I was delayed in reading!

That ending was magnificant. I loved the little bits I didnt see before too!! sorry it took me so long to get to review this. I was just smiling through the whole way and man its nice to read this with a view of what the characters look like. I have fallen in love with Ben and how cute is it that the boys have an older brother ... dunno why i just find it cute. and OUR boys antics are adorable. Glad some things never change :)

I was right there with ya until we got to Ben... Because... No.

That was kind of like reading Wuthering Heights - where every generation has the same names as the one before and you start to forget who's related to who! Maybe you guys need to make a family tree!

Interesting way to end this story anyway!

I really enjoyed this fic. I loved that Dean is in a committed relationship with 2 sons (plus Ben). I can see that - Dean is, and always will be about family, and just because he's in a relationship doesn't mean he's settled down. There's no picket white fence. Dean is still hunting.

I'm also not worried about any romance fics coming up, I know you and Ridley aren't going to go there. This universe is about The Brotherhood.

Wow. I only discovered the Brotherhood AU a while ago. In fact, Ridley's "The Edge of Winter" was the first story I followed 'live' as it was posted, after reading all the other stories over at the Hunter's Tomb. The world you all created sucked me in so quickly, and at times I find it really hard imaginging the SPN world without the additions you made for it. Just so you know how truly well thought-out I consider the stories you're spinning.
And I tend to be a sucky reviewer at times, so I am truly sorry that I haven't remarked on this story before, even though I read every weekly update religiously.
And now I read the epilogue. I have to admit I haven't really made up my mind about it yet. I guess you and Ridley have been discussing bringing in the next generation for a bit, and didn't just add it in a spur of the moment decision. I missed the updated profile page on the Hunter's Tomb, so it took me completely by surprise.
When I say I haven't made up my mind about it yet, I mean that I'm not entirely sure what to think of that addition yet. On the one hand I love the idea of a future for all the characters I've grown to love so much. And as you said, that's what the Brotherhood has always been about.
On the other hand, it of course gives a definite note to things. Now that you've introduced Max, JT and James, there's no going back on them. So while you leave a whole lot open to explore, it is now set in stone that twenty years in the future, this is what the life of Sam, Dean and Caleb is going to look like. It's a two-edged sword, and I think I personally still need some time get used to it.
Though I am grateful that you left a lot of things still open. That Dean is alive doesn't mean he never went to hell, so you can still work the storyline about his deal into your stories. And the fact that Dean seems to get moody at times (he doesn't strike me as the type to take walks normally, though the working on his cars in the barn I can absolutely see), and that Sam asks Caleb whether they did the right thing tells me that something did happen, and I can't wait to see what that something was. Does Dean go to hell in your universe, too? When and how will he come back? It will be interesting to see how you play that out in future stories.
The only thing that really didn't quite work for me in the epilogue was the amount of information you tried to transport.
Now, I know how strange it is to have a random reviewer pop up out of nowhere and start criticizing your story. Please bear with me, because I'm in no way flaming this story but rather pointing out one point that stood out to me in a chapter that otherwise worked really well. But feel free to ignore me but I need to get it off my chest ;-)
The way you introduced the characters was great. I first thought we were looking at some random teenagers that you were going to connect to the present time storyline somehow. And once I figured out that we were actually in the future, I was convinced for a while that JT and James were Sam's kids. It took a moment for everything to fall into place, and that worked very nicely. I like it when not everything is thrown at you at once.
But especially towards the end, there was too much information in this chapter for me. Of course the characters are new, and of course I'm absolutely curious about them, and about the future lives of Dean, Sam and Caleb.
But I guess that since you introduced these characters, you are going to do something with them in the future, too. They will appear in upcoming stories, in one way or another (at least that's my assumption right now). So I would have wished that you had waited a bit to reveal some information.
Especially the part about Mary and her mother didn't really fit into the chapter for me. It was too much information wrapped in a short descriptive paragraph that disrupted the flow of the chapter as it happened. To me it was clear that Mary was Sam's daughter, and that for some reason Sam and her mother were not together anymore. That would have been enough information to me, especially since Mary is a character that doesn't even appear in this chapter.
Especially compared to how you managed to do it with all the other characters, that was a little too much information for me. Maxim worked out very well in that regard, we know he's Joshua's son and he has a sister, but that's about it. The same goes for Juliet - you told me just enough about her to make me curious, but not too much.
It's really that part about Mary that stood out to me as odd and disrupted the flow of the chapter.
Buth otherwise, the more I think about it the more curious I get about this new generation of the Brotherhood.
Especially Maxim. Because ever since Joshua was forced to enter that coven and explicitly stated that he was only going to do so if it didn't concern his children, I couldn't get the thought of Josh having kids out of my head. For a while I suspected he might have a kid already that nobody knew about, but knowing that he's going to have kids in the future is really making my day. I love Josh :-)
So, this has gotten far too long already, so I'll just close this review by saying that I really enjoyed this story, and I can't wait for the next installment in the Brotherhood series.

Aw...wow...I'm kind of disappointed. I can't believe you got Dean all settled down. Sorry I don't like "settled down and happily ever aftered" Dean, ever. LOL Maybe if it just happened when he was 50 but these are teenagers which means it's going to start happening soon. Which probably means the future stories will have romance::shivers::

I don't read romance/het or anything like that so it's probably best if I stop reading now. I admit that is a shame because I had been interested in where this whole Guardian/Scholar/Knight thing was going. But knowing it's going to end up here? I have to be honest, it dampens my interest because I don't want to know how it got to this point. LOL For me this actually like a nightmare ending. Yeah I'm twisted that way.

That's not a comment on the quality though, just a parting of ways on where I can follow. I have truly enjoyed most of this series. It kept me going when the show seemed to be spiraling downward. You guys have done an amazing job and should to be very proud of yourselves.

I am amazed. I did not expect that at all but I LOVE IT! I love all the kids and their relationships. Its really amazing. I love the return of Ben and the new characters. This story was excellent and I love that you aren't going to stop telling the story of the angst filled journey up to this point. I really hope you plan on telling more about the kids though too. Awesome amazing job!

I love this new generation! They sounds cool!

It's just weird that they never named Dean by name, only Dad... Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of Dean as a father, he would be awesome at that job, but it was just weird not hearing his name...

I loved the look at the next generation of the Brotherhood. I have to admit, I had already gone there in my mind, but Sam was the one with the two boys! LOL! I also liked that Ben was Dean's son. I still feel like Dean took Lisa's word to readily.

What I really like the most is that Josh's children are right there with Dean's and Sam's. I've always felt like his contributions were always taken for granted, and that he was simply misunderstood by the boys. Well, Sam may understand more than he lets on. He was Pastor Jim's first boy after all, and he got replaced. He and the boys have a more typical relationship that most siblings have. You fight constantly, but when it counts you're standing next to them.

Okay enough rambling, characters like Josh just always win my sympathies.

(I am a Sam girl, I swear! LOL!)

This was a really great ending to this story. I love that the guys are still together and that there is a new generation. And that Mac is Grandpa Mac. I can't wait to see how they get there.

I loved reading about the next generation! Does this mean you guys are going to be writing more about them? I'd love to read it! Not that I don't love the original Brotherhood stories!
