Moony92 2008-09-24 . chapter 1Very rarely am I ever interested in SM/HP crossover stories; too often are they copouts and cliche's. But this is an exception because it is neither of those things. I must applaud you for this riveting first chapter, it really is a teaser. You've added such addictive suspence, I'm a tad dissapointed that I have to wait a few months before another update. But it's worth it!
I particularly love the dream sequence nearing the end, and the closing line was perfect. The whole thing gave off a sense of distrubing sensuality. I enjoyed reading it so much simply for the fact that it was told so well. :) I look forward to what the next chapter will reveal.
Great work! |
Jay FicLover 2008-09-23 . chapter 1Yay! You actually started a SM/HP story! My new obsession, SM/HP, by one of the gold old favourite authors of the old school! I can't begin to say how awed I am that one author of your caliber has decided to get into this type of crossover.
And I had been wondering how come no one, to my knowledge, had started a fic with this premise for a plot yet, when it offers a thousand possibilities, and the chance to either reduce the cliché factor to a lot less than what HP/SM readers are used to, or completely re-invent it (the cliché) in a way that makes the story refreshing among its usual kind. (I'm finding out more and more cliché can never be good or bad, but there is good and bad cliché just as there is good and bad cholesterol).
I would suggest you consider upping the rating though, just to be safe, for this was getting dangerously close to M rated, and I get the feeling that this will only get more and more obvious in future chapters. I concluded the boundaries of M rating in the SM crossovers sections are for some reason broader than in the plain Harry Potter book section and Sailor Moon anime section. Things, like mere suggestive language, that wouldn't be rated M in the other sections seem like they have to be rated M here, and I've seen stories get deleted for not complying with that. May be it's just because both the SM and HP sections have a lot more authors and stories and they can't possibly monitor them all as successfully as they do here, or may be I'm just paranoid, I don't know really... I myself rated some of my stories M just as a way of precaution.
Anyway, back to the review (be prepared, you might remember from Through a Child's Eyes that I like to give l o o ong reviews sometimes) I really liked this start because it was suggestive not only in the way mentioned, but suggestive as in really catching the reader's imagination by suggesting several scenarios and outcomes. You read this and you immediately start wondering, how is Serena there? How come Voldemort called her Serenity? Is this going to be an Alternate Universe fic or more on the Canon side? Is Serena supposed to be Sailor Moon or Sailor Cosmos here? Is it a dimension-jumping fic, a next-reincarnation/future fic, or happens in the SM present timeline and dimension?
...In other words, a lot of questions regarding what the background of this story is going to be, because that also helps define what is going to happen in future chapters. Readers can even make a guess at it too with some of this info. Personally, when writing one of my fics I decided to be evil and make it so that even post-amnesic Serena/Usagi kept wondering if she was 20th century's Sailor Moon or that Sailor Moon's reincarnation, or Sailor Cosmos, or neither, and if she was in an alternate dimension or just somehow time-travelled to the past or distant future in her own dimension. *cackles evilly* But that can only wor sometimes. Some stories do need that you explicitely describe a clarified background. Besides, as long as the author knows what it is, you get a better idea of where your story is going.
Furthermore, as requested in your author's note, count me in for someone to bounce ideas off of, if you want. I've been told I'm very good for that, and am pretty much obsessed with HP/SM fics so I will do the best I can. So may be I can help with those gaps? |
