JBQ 2009-04-20 . chapter 3I thought this chapter was hilarious! I just spent all night reading your other stories and I honestly think you are one of the best Avatar authors around. I particularly like how you've been handling the zutara, which is something I'm generally not to fond of. Anyways hope to see more of this story at some point. Good luck in the job search! |
Saucebender 2009-02-13 . chapter 3Wow, that was one of the funniest things I have read in a while! Poor Aang. I can't believe how calm Sokka is about it though. Oh well. I hope you write more of this story. |
Saucebender 2009-02-13 . chapter 2I just found this story and I like it a lot. Is the town that has a Holiday in honor of Zuko the town where Lee lives? |
profoundlycan 2008-12-26 . chapter 3Since reading your other series, I decided to try this story and so far I'm not disappointed. The first two chapters were excellent and I really enjoy how you write Mai. It's refreshing, even in spite of my character and shipping biases. The third chapter, while I have seen this particular idea portrayed in several other stories, I'll admit my disappointment upon reading the execution. Kudos to you for trying, but I just find it very, very hard to believe a 14-year-old does not know about such topics, even if he is a monk. I would expect him to know the facts, and any innuendo clearly going over his head since this is Aang we're talking about, but I don't expect him to be that oblivious. Other than the unbelievability of that chapter, I'm still thoroughly enjoying this and I look forward to your next update. |
Martikhoras/Darmani 2008-12-18 . chapter 3 I find Aang's complete naivete at little contrived. A child who knows about animals (and lived and grew up with them and plants) would have plenty of reason to know about sex/reproduction. There would be no compelling reason for the monks to HIDE this idea from him even by age twelve. "The stork"...if that's EVER been true is a very modern dodge.
It's funny but not funny if its meant to be a serious bit. Even if Aang wants to be married it strikes me as pointedly much he has such, well not just a childish idea about babies but a foolish one born of a person with no concept of the facts of life. I mean I doubt he's brushed up on the karma sutra. But even sequestered the monk boys had to have some idea how things got pregnate if only in the abstract without the each skills, techniques, and mechanics. |
MoonClaimed 2008-12-01 . chapter 3That ("So now you know how to make my sister a happy woman, huh?") was the best thing Sokka has EVER said! This story is awesome! Please, please, please keep going with it, even if it takes you a while to get new chapters out!
And I don't know why you were worried: the whole "talk" was handled very well and without being coarse at all (plus it was hilarious!). |
MoonClaimed 2008-12-01 . chapter 1Oh! This is off to a fun, if somewhat... interesting, start! I'm off to read the next chapter. |
Kristoshi Warrior 2008-12-01 . chapter 3Wow, this is really good, can't wait for more-I just about burst out laughing when I read the third chapter. |
LavenderSkies 2008-11-02 . chapter 3Hey there! It's been a while...again. Haha! I'm still way behind in reading your other story, but this one caught my interest and, since it's a separate story, I thought I'd start reading it first. Anyway, nice start! I'm intrigued, especially after reading your notes in the first chapter about what you're trying to explore and accomplish with this piece. I wasn't too excited by how the series wrapped up. Partly to do with what you had mentioned, partly because it felt rather rushed. It's kinda hard to sum up. The thing that had me going "huh?" the most was how Azula all of a sudden and very conveniently went kinda unstable. And Ty Lee joining the Kyoshis was rather random. Haha.
Right now, I'm most interested in what you're doing with Mai. Her decision to journey for self discovery was unexpected, but at the same time makes sense. Looks like she's trying to deal with some guilt for the part she did play in the war, and feeling like she can't compare w/ the others. Poor girl seems so lost.
I had a good laugh about "the talk". LOL! And Zuko grabbing a tiny box off Suki's stack just to get away was totally hilarious! |
Ming Mar 2008-11-01 . chapter 3Really interesting so far. Especially since it seems many of the 'loose ends' that bothered you also bothered me, like Mai's redemption story. I've always wondered about Aang and The Talk, but I'm glad he got it from someone like Iroh. |
MacFie 2008-10-29 . chapter 3This has been sitting in my inbox for two days and I couldn't get to it. What a treat when I finally could. Very cute. I can just imagine getting The Talk from Iroh. It might actually be kind of hard to decipher. LOL.
You know my pairing preferences, so I am definitely not going to rant. I'm just enjoying you doing this exploration, because it really does need to be done and you'll do it well. |
sylvanharlequin 2008-10-28 . chapter 3very nice. i liked sokka's "now you know how to make my sister a happy woman." NOT what i would say to my sister's boyfriend but hilarious. very well written as usual. |
Karalora 2008-10-27 . chapter 3Too young at fourteen? If anything, that's rather *late* to begin one's education in this area, considering most people are well into puberty by that point, and Aang is clearly no exception. Of course, he has the excuse of having been raised in a cloistered monastery until age 12, then getting frozen for a century, then being rather busy saving the world and whatnot...but still, you'd think it would have occurred to *someone* to explain things to a lovestruck adolescent, instead of waiting for him to reveal his ignorance.
Of course, they've all been similarly busy.
In any case, I always get a kick out of stuff like this. It's a shame that a series that was in many ways a coming-of-age story couldn't touch much on biological coming-of-age without drawing the ire of the censors. It's doubly sad when you consider all the little instances in which the writers bumped right up against the limits of the ratings system in that regard. So close...and yet so far. |
Amira Elizabeth 2008-10-26 . chapter 3The chapter was cute. This story seems interesting and this is one that I think I might be returning to read
But one issue bugged me. I don't think Aang is as naive as you made him out to be. At 12 or 13 most kids have some understanding of sex and procreation and I don't think Aang would be as clueless about the whole thing as you made him to be.
There is this fandom misconception IMO that Aang is this clueless, naive child-like simpleton when it comes to such things and I have a feeling that his prior world travels (before being frozen) may have provided some education plus the air nomads might have taught the children about it on some level.
I hope the all realism doesn't get in the way of the magic of these characters. Part of the appeal of Avatar is it is not real life. It'll be interesting to see how you do this but there is the potential I think for it to become TOO realistic and TOO heavy-handed. If I wanted real life, I'd go live my own. :D
But this seems to be off to a good start overall. I am intrigued. |
NullChronicler 2008-10-26 . chapter 3That was hilarious. I wonder how Iroh explained everything? Probably with lots of jokes and indecipherable metaphors, that's my guess. It's a bit of a short chapter, but it really does solidify the feel that the characters are getting back to the business of growing up and figuring out what the heck this wierd thing called "peace-time" is.
Normally, I would say it's odd that Toph, at 12 or 13, would know about The Talk while Sokka, a 16yo warrior, wouldn't. However, given the fact that Toph is the kind of person to listen at doors when her parents think she's asleep, and given Sokka's general thick-headedness sometimes, I'll buy it.
Onward to glory and Chapter 4!
