They decided that the concept of human-looking robots and time travel would make an interesting story, even if the humans had to win in the end. They produced a movie series and a television show about it, based partially on their own history of Cylon-human conflicts, and named the archvillain AI after the British military satellite network.

Fun, cracky, strange story. I like to imagine that the Cylons were the ones who came up with the Terminator films, making Crichton comparing them to Arnold Schwarzennegger a stable time loop.
