Alice I
2009-11-12 . chapter 1
I found this story in someone's list of favorites and since it was in along with some other stories that I thought were well written I was interested in seeing what The Price of Pride was.

I think that it is quite a good story. You have pegged the characters voices very well. I could easily envision the events as they unfolded. You obviously knew a little something about jousting as I did recognize some of the terms you used when describing the field and the sport. I'm no expert of course, but some of that stuff from the Renaissance Fair kind of stuck! LOL

There were a few typos that were a little distracting, but overall they weren't too bad.

I am looking forward to reading the rest of this tale and will leave another review once I have finished it.

Aw...Thanks for this wonderful story. I could have done with a little more romance, I'll admit. But I think the story ended realistically. Maybe you could put up an epilogue? I'm adding this story to my fav list...PLS WRITE MORE!

I loved this chapter! So sweet, but very sexy too...loved Arthur's discomfort while Morgana was tending to his wound. And it was delightful to see some of their banter return as Arthur continues healing. And oh the kiss was so lovely, I think it is exactly how their first kiss would be, b/c both have such strong feelings for each other, but each is very unsure of what the other feels. And Merlin interrupting them was just priceless. I wonder how they'll face each other after this?!?!

Another awesome chapter. Love the interactions between the characters. Between Merlin and Morgana and ESP betw Morgana and Uther. She's certainly a brave little minx isn't she? It looks like Arthur is going to be just fine after all. Yay! I'm going to continue on to see what happens next!

Another fantastic chapter. What's so great about your writing is that you show everything that's going on rather than just tell. Your dialogue and description really brought the whole scene alive. I felt so scared for poor Arthur. And you captured the concern and fear of the other characters perfectly. Great job! Time for the next chapter...

WOW. This is not only my fav Merlin story thus far, but one of my fav fanfics overall. Your characterization and dialogue are dead on. You handle action scenes well. And I love the interaction between Arthur and Morgana. What wonderful banter! I feel worried for poor Arthur though? Will he be ok? Oh, I know he was being arrogant and thus not careful, but it would have been sweet if he had won the tournament for her...Time to read teh next chapter...THANK YOU FOR THIS!

Oh, this was so terribly good from start to finish.

I loved all the Arthur/Morgana moments. With him announcing in a very dramatic fashion his intention to win the tournament for her in front of the entire crowd, thus forcing her to take part in his little charade. To her being terribly worried for him and being unable to hide it. To her being indignant on his behalf against the king for not coming to visit.

The scene where she was tending his wound and he couldn't help but take enjoyment out of it was written so well. I love how he had to quash his less than chivalrous thoughts once his father came in the room. And finally, the kiss was built up to perfectly. Love that Arthur shot daggers at Merlin for interrupting afterwards.

And I love their interaction after the kiss and that you didn't have them rush into anything. It'd be very unlike either of them and it is so like Arthur to consider all the implications of courting her. He knows he has other duties first. And he wants to court her in the right fashion, not only as an example but I think because he respects her too much to be involved with her dishonorably. That and like you put he find it harder to confront his feelings for her now that he's not sick in bed.

And then, OH! I think one of my favorite parts of this whole thing though was Merlin. You write a great Merlin. you really capture his awkwardness and his kind spirit and his great sense of humor. I can always see him with that cheeky grin as he bantered with Arthur. And I love his inner conflict about whether or not to be optimistic or not. The line about how he'd saved him from all these magic threats but almost got him hurt by a mere game was brilliant, and very reflective of the failure in duty he must have been feeling while Arthur was sick.

I also enjoyed how it took him a moment to realize what Morgana and Arthur had been doing before he grinned widely. And his comment that the two of them were sweet could not have been more well-put to embarrass them both.

I also think one of my favorite parts was his scene with Morgana in Gaius' room as she went off to was her hands. Merlin has such a big heart and it tugged at mine to see him wanting to comfort her as best he could, before he realized he was intruding.

I also like that he ended up surprised by her kindness and her interest in getting to know him when they got to know each other better as they both watched over Arthur. And you also explained well why they steered away from other topics, finding it too difficult to bear to talk about Arthur with the state the prince was in.

And oh, the ending! I'm glad Arthur was able to resolve the doubt in his mind. That was a great insight too, that Arthur felt frustrated at his injury because he knew he had a duty to his people. I liked that earlier Morgana had felt guilty for thinking it was his vanity was the reason.

But yes, he proved to himself and his people that he was more than capable of defending Camelot. But of course the two people whose opinions who mattered most were Morgana and Arthur. :)

This was such a great piece of fiction. Not only because you once again do such a great job in your portrayal of the characters but it really did force Arthur to think on the price of pride. And it showed him he wasn't invincible, and not to be so darn overconfident all the time. A lesson he needs to learn to be a good king, which he will be! :)
