And at that moment Jamesrealizes his Kimmie-cub is a little more of an adult than he wanted to admit.

Excellent work, sir.

That's a very interesting take on Kim's memory lapse and her subsequent recovery, although I think it's a little more plausible to think that he would have decided that such an aspect of her life would be something best left to Kim to remember on her own. After all, if he could trick her into "liking" Captain Constellation, he could have tricked her into "liking" Ron, and that's a question no relationship needs.

I like! Never seen a story like this, it's usually Kim who is the intellectual snob, and her mom and dad providing the voice of reason. A little short, but well worth the read.

I had suspected James as being the culprit behind Kim’s ignorance of Ron as her BF in “Clean Slate.” However, I had seen it as a manifestation of his desire to keep her his little Kimmie Cub for at least a little while longer—a short reprieve from the anxiety caused by her being “involved” with a boy. I assumed he knew it wouldn’t last, but that James was willing to take whatever time her amnesia could afford him.

I certainly had not imagined it belying such a dramatic undercurrent. Certainly, not as a calculated attempt to split them up or that it masked strong feelings he had against Ron being his daughter’s boyfriend. However--and this what makes the James in this story forgivable, I don’t believe he may have fully understood his motives until he looked into his daughter’s piercing eyes and confessed them.

When she first confronts him with the disk, his pattern of denials seems to indicate that, at least initially, he may have been hiding the truth from himself as well as from her. For instance, his mistaking her rage for being over the Captain Constellation “brainwash” he attempted seems genuine.

Once he admits that his omissions on the DVD were because he thought she’d be better off without being Ron’s GF, his excuses have a different ring. He is throwing every cliché in the book at her (graduation, long distance relationship, etc) almost as if he doesn’t want to voice the truth. Before he has to admit that it isn’t the sitch that concerns him as much as it is the person she had chosen to accompany her in the sitch. I have no proof for this, but the justifications he gives afterward seem overly defensive—like making excuses for something you didn’t realize at first you had even done.

I feel the following line is paramount to judging his motives:
‘“Oh, I wasn’t referring to that,” James said blithely. “I was talking about you planning on a future with Ronald.”’
The first time I read it, I thought he was being incredibly cruel. But, then when I reread it, I realized that wasn’t the case. “Blithely” doesn’t denote “careless” or “insensitive” in this context. It reflects James’ cluelessness.

This is the same cluelessness that he has exhibited every so often in the series. Ironically, it is the quality that he shares, to a certain degree, with Ron. And although it does not serve him well in his daughter’s eyes at that moment, I feel it is the part of his character that, in the end, allows her to forgive him as quickly as she does.

Why not? In a strange way, part of why Kim loves Ron is because there is something about him that reminds her of her father.

I’ll only add that I liked how you framed this within the context of S4 (it obviously took place before Kim reconciled herself with Yori), and that I really enjoyed Kim’s take on her realization that she “thought” she loved Ron.

Kim throws a hissy at her father? He should have unbuckled his belt...six of the best! Do her good! Just kidding...almost. Sometimes Kim tends to forget who's the parent and who's the child.
Nice story, shows how much she cares for Ron.

I've got admit that I never noticed that till you said it right now in this story, but he didn't include Kim and Ron's union ship. I must admit nice spin put on the whole reason why and whatnot. Glad to see things worked out some what in the end her dad may not fully accept it but he's learning.

James T, nice little ditty, I'll send you a PM on something though. Good talk, and way to staighten out a dad. Even the ones that want to protect their daughters may be way off base.

Thanks,

Oh, great story as always, MrDrP. Very nice take on a possible reaction that Kim would have if she saw that DVD after she recovered her memories.

Nothing like some Father, Sons bonding to end the story. While it was a mistake that many fathers might have done to protect their daughter from someone they didn't think suited thier daughter, it doesn't mean it was the right thing. Personally, I'm under the guideline that the world would suffer if Kim and Ron ever split up, considering how things went when they weren't together in the series.

An excellent 'plot hole filler' of what could have happened after that episode.

"I’ve seen the stories on-line, the snarky comments that Ron’s not good enough for me"

So Kim checks out the Kigo stories on FFN, huh? Yikes!

Nice job capturing the emotional ups and downs of a Father/(Almost Adult) Daughter relationship!

This is a bit hard-hitting. For Dr. Possible to say something so upfront like that to his daughter. I didn't think he had it in him. The way he described Ron was almost prejudiced...it was. But it's good to see that he finally admitted that Possible can screw up as well.
