I always sis think that if he'd had the time to properly reflect on what nearly happened that night to Hermione without the tragedy of Sirius's death getting in the way that he would have come to this conclusion. . .

Sadly that never happened in canon but at least we have great fanfiction like this ficlet to turn to.
