scrimshaw 2009-02-14 . chapter 1I've had this story on my list to review for a while, and I've finally come back to it. What an excellent character study of the Eppes brothers dynamic, and so well written. Amita and Allan came off clearly as themselvs but didn't steal the show, and the actual discussion between Charlie and Don was amazing. This was a great examination of the lost-clearance issue, a real deep investigation of how these two different but connected individuals face off not just against the world around them, but themselves. I loved Charlie's attempt to interact with Don, and his inability to find the right words (the throwaway metaphor was a smiling moment for me, it felt so right for these two!), and Don's struggle to explain a situation even he doesn't clearly understand. The finishing paragraph on symmetry reminds me of one of my favorite brothers moments, in Janus List when Don figured out the musical notes and Charlie said "Is that how I look when--?" This had that same feeling of connectedness, of interconectedness. The oneshot finished off just like the tag to an episode, wrapped up in character and on a good note. Brava. |
