You don't say if the war is still on or not, but Snape could always plead a shortened lifespan (for both him and Miss Granger) to grasp the fleeting sweetness of life while they still can, etc.)--and if the war is over and they've won, then Snape is finally free and 'go ahead, fire me, I quit!'.
