An absolutely gorgeous story. I'm sure you've had your praises sung before, but I'll echo every single one of them and throw in a crate of oranges.
Beautiful, and so natural and touching and that's just what I think about the pairing. Language and storyline were artfully done, with a masterful attention to details and the world around the main story. It's probably been ages since you've paid any heed to pings on your stories, but there's bound to be some age old proverb somewhere that nobody knows about appreciation not given.
