Charlie Girl 79 2009-02-28 . chapter 1from your pages to Kripke's ear...let the brothers be brothers!
Loved this fic. Bobby can cut through the crap and get to the heart of the matter.

Twinchy 2009-02-18 . chapter 1Very insightful and necessary conversation between Bobby and Dean.
Whereas I don't agree completely about John's taking Sam out at the first sign of trouble, I certainly agree on everything else. Their Dad would indeed have encouraged his youngest to hone his powers and use them against the demons, all the time keeping a wary eye on him. IMHO he would also have gone out of his own way saving Sam from becoming evil - at all costs, eventually (but not before).
Now it's up to Dean to be Sammy's brother and protector again (a task he sadly let slip in recent time) instead of his judge.
I loved Bobby telling the older Winchester that their Dad would have been proud of him for 'surviving' hell. He really would have been; as you pointed out correctly, he'd been there too and would have known what happened to one there. It's hell, after all.
And you painted a smug smile on my face for mentioning how John would have given the angels a piece of his mind, hands down! |
Landwing 2009-02-18 . chapter 1Holy [insert expletive of choice]. Wow. That's...that's a lot to think about. But, yeah, that's probably what John would've done. I wonder if the show will go in that direction. It's definitely one way to deal with things, but...yikes. That's an awful lot to think about. If you ever decide to have Sam's reaction, that might be interesting to see.
I have to agree with the part about Uriel, though. An individual with a larger wish to get his rump handed to him I have not seen on the show. I kinda wish they could do it, too.
Good job, Phx. |
 Deej1957 2009-02-18 . chapter 1Good one.
Wish the show was a little more like this. |
SophieSaulie 2009-02-17 . chapter 1SO LOVED this interaction between Dean and Bobby. There is such a deep kinship between Bobby and the boys, maybe for me, as a blatant and unrepentant DeanGirl, even more so with Dean. There's this sense of need on Dean's part to treat Bobby like a father as evidenced in Dream a Little Dream for Me. Not that Sam isn't just as important, but the connection between Bobby and Dean seems so much closer so for me, your story was a natural. It made perfect sense that Dean would confide in Bobby and that Bobby would be honest with Dean about John. I LOVED IT!
Fav. Parts:
“What do you think my Dad would do?” Dean heard himself asking before he even knew he had a question. “About all this, I mean. Sam, Castiel, me…”
--I LOVE and hate that Dean is still seeking what his father would think or would do, almost as if he questions his actions thusfar.
“If your daddy was here right now, he’d be playing with fire.”
Dean glanced up at the cryptic nature of the answer. “Playing with fire?”
“Sure,” Bobby grinned and sat down next to him now, “his usual stuff. ** people off on both sides to get the job done.”
--I LOVE Bobby's honest assessment of John here.
Dean snorted a laugh, imaging that meeting. John Winchester was a bastard but he did love his boys so Dean could easily imagine the incensed hunter taking the angels to task and then giving then their walking papers. If the Winchesters weren’t good enough to help before, they damn well didn’t need their help now.
--SO TRUE!
Dean took a mouthful of beer mulling this over. Bobby was right. And now that he thought about it, it was easy to imagine how excited John would have been to have a son that could exorcise with thought, and heaven knew, what else Sam could do.
“But,” Bobby’s gruff voice broke into his thoughts. “But,” he repeated, “he’d also be watching… with loaded gun.” Now it was Dean who was grim as the man finished, “First sign of trouble and he’d take the kid out himself.”
Dean closed his eyes for a moment and swallowed hard at the thought.
“It wouldn’t have been easy for him, though, Dean. Don’t ever think that. Your Daddy loved both you boys more than his own life,” Dean already knew that, “but he’d also kill you first before he’d let anything hurt you like that.”
--SO LOVED THIS! I loved that Bobby stressed that John's actions would always stem from love, as harsh as the decisions might have been for him. It also mirrors what Castiel told Dean about the decisions he'd have to make, that he didn't envy Dean for those decisions. I believe that there will come a moment where Dean will have to face potentially taking Sam out as John might have had to if he had lived, but I believe that John knew that if there was a way to win with compassion as opposed to violence, Dean would find it. Sure, he told Dean that if he couldn't save Sam, he'd have to kill him, but I know that John was banking that Dean would do anything to avoid killing Sam.
“No, Bobby. I have. I’m not trying to say Sam’s not got his own share of blame on this too, but for the last year I’ve been wound so tight about all this, and about what Dad told me I might have to do, that I’ve shut the kid down and made it impossible for him to tell me the truth about what’s going on. **. What the hell happened?” he repeated.
“Hell, Dean,” Bobby spoke quietly, “Hell happened.”
--I LOVE that you have Dean blaming himself. It's so typical of him.
“Knowledge is power,” the older man stated out of the blue and when Dean gave him a blank look he continued, “safer to know how to use a weapon than to have your enemy teach you through the humility of defeat.”
“Who said that?” Dean had never heard that one before.
“I said it, you idjit,” Bobby scoffed and then stood up.
--HILARIOUS!! I SO LOVE BOBBY!
“What you did?” Enlightenment fired protectiveness in the older hunter and his conviction startled Dean. “You survived, Dean. No shame in that.” He paused and added when he saw the doubtful look on the younger man’s face. “Your Daddy was there too, Dean, don’t forget that. He would have understood and been proud. Damn proud.” He moved away from Dean and towards the front door. He opened the door and then stopped. “You and Sam? There was never anything that you boys could do that wouldn’t make him proud of you. Not as long as you remembered who you were and did the best you could. I want you to remember that, Dean.”
--OH! WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL words. Bobby is just THE BEST character next to the boys. He's this anchor that you know the boys could never do without.
Thanks for writing a great Bobby/Dean story! |
Nana56 2009-02-17 . chapter 1Absolutely brilliant! You've given me some hope. *kisses your feet* Thank you so much! *sends meaningful glare towards Kripke*
A perfect solution. :) |
ROBINV 2009-02-17 . chapter 1OH, I SO wish this would really happen! Let Sam develop his powers, but with DEAN there to watch and make sure Ruby isn't doing anything to harm his brother, that nothing gets out of hand! Instead of standing in his way, allow him to do what he wants! I LOVE this story so much, it's exactly what I wish WOULD happen on the show instead of Sam sneaking around with Ruby, learning his powers in darkness and secret!
Love, Robin |
Ash8 2009-02-16 . chapter 1Could you send this to Kripke et al so they could write this into the next episode? I would love to see this happen. Their expanding rift if breaking my heart (though I know it's all part of the journey and story - so that's exciting) - so serious healing is required.
This helped.
Thanks.

mtee1958 2009-02-16 . chapter 1Very very interesting. I like that thought. Dean goes along -- keeping an eye on Ruby and how things are going.
Good story.
John was a soldier, he knows sometimes you do things in battle that you would never normally do. Time in hell is one big battle. |
Linnie McCary 2009-02-16 . chapter 1Brilliant, Phx--so well done, even though I don't agree with you on everything (or maybe I just don't want to believe John would take out Sam). The decision you have Dean making feels "right," and your Bobby was just perfect. |
sunnyjunedays 2009-02-16 . chapter 1Hi, This was great, just the thing i would like to see happen eventually on the show. Who knows maybe it will in time, once both Sam and Dean reach the conclusion that they have both been through so much but are fighting for the same outcome.
Is there any chance you will be writing a follow up with the chat between Sam and Dean? x |
serena 2009-02-16 . chapter 1 oh how I wish this actually happened in the show!! I am sick and tired of the rift between the boys, and I wish dean would come to this conclusion...sigh...sadly it only exists in the world you've created...
excellent job! |
tsweeny 2009-02-16 . chapter 1I enjoyed reading this. I think you did a great job with this conversation. It's a moment I could really see happening between Dean and Bobby and I'm glad that you wrote it. |
