This is FAR from crap. It's heart felt, and I like that. It gives insight into Near's character, which I also like. It stays true to canon as well. Don't ever knock yourself down (I'm already holding one author's hand as it is because of that), you are an excellent writer, that's why I got into all this in the first place (as I've told you on more than one occasion). Anyone who could inspire me to write SoL, is worth their weight (and more) as an author, so show some confidence. That's why I fell in love with your work in the first place.
