Well, another thoughtful story. Very well done. Believe it is the first one of yours I've read that had this mystical touch with the Lord himself. Good to read about His love and forgiveness and approval, rather than abomination and damnation. At one point in the hospital, I almost thought Jack had seen this same figure at some point in his life, too. But later decided Jack was just concerned about Ennis hallucinating while asleep/on pain drugs.
In OS Ennis never had that "significant emotional event" after leaving Brokeback and Jack, which would make him totally reconsider his choices, find inner approval, until it was too late. Even then, in OS he didn't open up and allow his real inner self to come out, but stayed burrowed deep within himself. What happened to Jack only confirmed his fears, and didn't make him reconsider where his fears had left him at age 39 with so many decades ahead of him. That's what makes the au/Ennis-moves-on stories [Ennis & Mitch, Laramie Saga, The Gift of Exile; The Greatest Love/Night Fire], where Ennis gives himself a chance at love while not forgetting his Jack, and the dead!Jack stories [OS, Dear Jack, Somebody Loved Me Once], where Ennis lives with his regrets, so poignant.
Glad you keep on writing, and find innovative ways for the two of them to find a way to be together.
Thanks again. |
