Vampiress-Alexiel 2009-08-07 . chapter 1Aww, so cute! Evil math teachers... Dean is so cute as the helluva-big-brother, and little Sammy is just way adorable! Thanks for posting this, it was such a fun read. I love your little Winchester fics, they're all so believable and I can totally see them as an episode! |
Nana56 2009-05-05 . chapter 1I had the same conversation that Dean had with Sam re: showing his work, with our son when he was in high school. The very same one! He ALWAYS got poor grades in math and it was because he didn't show his work. He wanted to go much further and so could have, but by then, we were having trouble reaching him about some things. Eventually, all the math teachers refused to work with him. It broke my heart, but...*shrugs* He's fine now, tho.
For this situation to be in here, you must have come across it several times. *heart aches for Sammy* Jason's teachers weren't monsters and the problems were different, but I understand.
Dean handled it very well for that moment. Sam was brilliant and it wasn't going to be a problem in his future.
Sorry I'm babbling. :) Loved it! |
bhoney 2009-05-05 . chapter 1Ack! Somehow I'd missed that this was up already!
"Sam thought of all the words he knew that started with U – unexpected, unjust, and unkind. Unsatisfactory was just unfair-unacceptable. Sam expected nothing but the best. School was always the one place he got everything right, the place where answers were abundant and his for the taking." Aw, this made me so sad for little Sammy. And he's right--u-words are mostly bad. Hadn't noticed that before.
This just about broke my heart for Sammy: "No one wanted a math dummy for a son or a brother." It hurt to see him so dejected. *sniffle*
"At his last school Sam had come home with a black eye. Dean had gotten expelled." Now why do I think those two events were directly related? ;) I'd like to read that story, I'm a sucker for "Dean beats up bully to protect Sam" stories. LOL
"...he gave Sam the look-the one that said he needed to explain quickly before Captain One Helluva Big Brother emerged like the Hulk. Dean was sort of like David Banner. It was hard to contain his alter ego once it was set free." Ha! Loved that! Great analogy, Dean like the Hulk. *snickers*
Oh, you can just hear poor Sammy's affront and helplessness here: “But I don’t know what to do. I got a ‘U’, Dean. A ‘U’.” Poor kid. I wonder if that green shirt thing really would've helped. Seems kinda silly. Poor Sam, they didn't have anything green, and of course, no money to get something. They're probably lucky to have food. *wants to kick Sam's teacher* It's sweet that Dean took him to try and find something at the Salvation Army, anyway. He'd do anything for Sammy. I really hope no teacher would actually hold something like that against a kid.
Loved this: “All I’m saying is you’re a black belt at multiplication. Division should be a piece of pie.” Loved both the image of Sam being a black belt at multiplication, and Dean's use of "piece of pie"--of course he wouldn't say "piece of cake" like everyone else. It's ALL about the pie. *snort*
LOVED the little glimpse at what Dean had done to help Sam learn his multiplication. Very sweet. Great idea too, using good old Chuck and the black belt concept. This made me giggle: “That’s great, Sammy, but obviously Mrs. Reilly isn’t handing out prizes for the quickest mathlete.” Especially since we know that Sam went on to become a mathlete. *snickers*
LOVED this: "Sam grinned. Dean was definitely his favorite teacher." Aw...*sniffle* Now THERE'S the relationship I want to see on-screen! And I loved what this says about their relationship: "It was still hard for Dean to believe anyone wouldn’t like Sam." I love stories/episodes that show that they don't just love each other, they LIKE each other.
This made me giggle: "Dean had two choices; pick on his little brother or be nice to him while his father was away. A lot of the times it was more fun to go the torture route. He had an image to maintain". Sounds just like a brother. Sad that all of this is happening the week of November 2, though. Poor Dean.
Loved this too: "His brother was nervous on Thursday morning so Dean made sure to leave him the last of the Lucky Charms for breakfast." It's the little sacrifices that show how much Dean loves and cares for Sammy, as much as the big ones.
"Dean refused to let his brother be bullied by other students. He sure as hell wasn’t going to let a teacher get away with it." LOVED how Dean stood up to that horrible teacher, and that he didn't let her intimidate him or threaten to send Sam to the principle, but threatened her right back. Great detail that she didn't call Sam "Sam" but "Samuel". Nice bit of characterization.
"“Do you think she’ll like me now?” Dean’s chest tightened. “I’m not sure Mrs. Reilly likes anyone.”...“Oh.” Sam looked down at his paper again, the teasing not working its typical magic. “Maybe Dad will be happy.” Dean worried that would be unlikely, too. Their father could be clueless on a good day. Any day near November 2 was not a good day." This made me so sad for Sammy, he wants so much to please those around him. And I loved that Dean worried for him, and felt his pain. And eventually cheered him up, as only he can. Loved that Dean blew off his friends and the cute girl to take Sam out for ice cream.
Great ending: “Nothing but the best for Dean Winchester’s little brother.” Of course!
Very nicely done! Great characterization, nice brotherly moment, lovely bit of protective Dean, and very well-written. Thanks so much for this! I'm favoriting it! |
