I thought this was really, really good. I loved the light and the dark that you incorporated, the expert knowledge of Jim's character that game across in the first few lines, and the thought processes that led the story along. It was truly a pleasure to read.

Well done! At first I thought the cadets had a chip on their collective shoulder, but you cleared that up right away.

Somehow, I think the title "hero" will be more difficult than "captain" for young Kirk to endure. Great, thought-provoking story!
