This is a sweet family fic. There's so much out there where Kirk has a horrible, abusive, childhood that makes it a miracle for him to have made it to adulthood as sane as he did. This fic is closer to my own perception - that Kirk was more or less left to his own devices growing up. Maybe a bit neglected, but loved and cared for. This makes his recklessness and sanity that much more believable. Honestly, as this movie is my introduction to Star Trek (the original crew at least) I wasn't aware of G. Samuel Kirk. But I thought this was really sweet and believable. I'm happy Jim is mature enough to take the tentative peace offering. And to call his mom at the end... =)
