I remember as soon as I heard this Watanuki and the adult Card Captor Sakura crew were entwined I thought "Syaoran (TRC) from Sakura and Syaoran (CSS) and Watanuki from Tomoyo and Eriol!"

Do you think Clamp will make a connection between Watanuki and Eriol?

Yep, Watanuki is Syaoran and Syaoran is Watanuki. Though it could be totally possible that CLAMP used Eriol as an idea for Watanuki's design.
